Starter lags when hot
If this has been covered, sorry, I did a search and nothing came up.
Anyway, over the last couple of days, I have noticed that my ZL1 starts right up when cold. But, after driving for a few hours and the outside temp is over 90 F, the starter seems to lag, almost like the battery is weak. But, a test shows it fine And, when the engine is cold, the starter sounds fine. Anyone else notice this?

Starters at least used to be susceptible to heat especially in hot rod type applications and especially where headers are involved but I'd have to say it's much less common in modern cars and isn't too unusual.

This sounds crazy but usually that's a sign of a higher compression motor(Which should not be with a factory motor), but I wonder about your timing which should not be off.
I hope it's a small issue, maybe a weak starter, get it hot and take it to the dealer and let them here it. |

Motor is bone stock
The only things I have added to this car is a dry Green filter in the stock air box and an 8 ball shifter handle. No headers, still has the full factory exhaust.

Very common on 2016s from what i know. The starters heat soak, but i thought they added additional heat shielding from 2017 on. Mine almost didn't start at all 2 weeks ago after driving to the gas station directly from a 93 degree track session.

Yes SteveV my ZL1 is like that too and my 2016 2SS that I had was real bad about doing it too. Actually the SS was worse than the ZL1 especially when it was real hot outside.

My ZL1 doesn’t do it all the time just intermittently.

My 2019 ZLE has weak starts following a track session and I just attribute it to heat soak. I had a 2017 Cadillac CTS-V and that car sometimes would not start after a 25 minute track session and would need to sit for a little while before it would start up again. So at least the ZLE is an improvement.

My C6 was prone to heat soak on really hot days after the A&A SC was installed on it. I got into the habit of popping open the hood when ever I parked the car. That little opening was enough to get rid of the heat soak.

I would say a bad starter or negative battery cable is not grounded good, The hotter the starter the more resistance so a bad ground could cause this. When they did your oil pump they could of not done it right when they connected the cables.

My SS had the slow start issue bad. Replaced battery a year ago, never had the issue since. I firmly believe the fault is in the crappy OEM battery.

Wifes car developed it I'd ck the cables on the battery they tend to loosen some how. Fixed our problem.. my zl1 did same but I got stability light and car shut off out of the blue. Grab hold of the terminals if you can twist the terminals at all it's to loose.

I've had this same issue even with cold starts to where it takes 2-3 times for the car to finally turn over when remote starting.
The most common occurrence I've noticed this happening is when I go to pump gas and try to start. It takes 2-3 times of me pushing to start to get it to finally start the engine. I've taken my car to the dealership they said it was due to a bad battery so then replaced it. Couple of weeks later the same issue popped back up and I'll be taking it back to the dealership again tomorrow.. I've read somewhere on this forum that there was a possible fix by adding a new ground cable that connects from the engine to the frame. Has anyone tried this possible solution? |
