Question New Car (2SS 1LE), Tire Decision

Hi all, new here. Just picked up my ’23 2SS 1LE this week. Loving it so far. I didn’t let the dealer wash it so I will post a few pictures after the first wash.

I am sure this has been asked many times over the years but please bear with me. I might explore tracking in the future but for now, I don’t plan on it. For those who don’t track or intend to track your vehicle, how did you proceed with the factory Goodyears that come on the 1LE?

I have come to realize these tires only last about 7k miles and are terrible in the rain and hydroplane badly. It rains a fair amount here. Below are the paths I am currently exploring.

Drive the stock tires until bald (roughly 7k miles) and then buy different tires. I am worried about performance in rain with this option from what I have seen people say on the forum.

Sell the stock tires to offset cost of new tires. Car currently has less than 100 miles. For the new tires, I am looking at the Conti Extreme Contact DWS 06+ all seasons ($1282) and the Extreme Contact Sport 02 summer ($1756) tires. I have read PS4S is the best but I don’t exactly want to pay the Michelin tax just yet. To go with this option, I will need to be able to sell the stock tires. Is there any market for these and how much could I realistically get for them?

Appreciate any input. Thanks.

Please do not put an all season tire on this type of car. You will be greatly disappointed. You say Austin, so I presume TX. You will be fine with summer tires. You can sell your stock tires to Discount tire, they do it all the time. I actually got a deal buying some used <200 miles tires off a BMW once. Then just get the PS4S or any other good summer tire.

My 2SS 1LE will be delivered shortly and I will live with the stock tires. I have had them before and I can deal with them until replacement time.

Thanks for response @Caerus. I actually went to Discount Tire and they said they won't accept trade for the Goodyears because it's too specialized. Essentially not a big market for specialized high performance track tires.

They pushed me towards the all season Conti but I haven't made a decision and still thinking through things. I am leaning towards the summer Conti though.

Summer conti is good. You can definitely sell your stock tires, question is finding the right buyer. Try the members classifieds! Had them in 305 on the rear on my LT1 and they hook for sure

Decide what you are going to do wih the car:
Track it= the goodyears
Summer driving= summer tires
I daily drive most of the year so I got Conti DWS06 and they stick in all types of weather.

Good to hear you have had a good experience with the all-season Conti. This is my 2nd vehicle so will probably only drive it in the summer. But with it being so fun to drive, might be hard for me to put it away for the colder months .

I paid the Michelin tax on the PS4S and never looked back That said, the Conti ExtremeContact Sport 02 is cheaper and close in all metrics, you will probably be happy with those.

Two things you shouldn't do, though: runflat or all-season tires. This is a 1LE, give it the respect it deserves. Congratulations on your new Camaro, by the way, you have chosen very well

If you will only be driving in warm dry weather then the OEM tires will be fine. If you have a phenomenon we call weather, ie it’s occasionally wet, cold or both I recommend Conti all seasons.

On a cold wet day with OEM tires you will get dragged by Volvo station wagons while the OEM bricks sit and spin searching for traction. I’ve put over 60,000 miles on my 1LE in all kinds of weather. I’ve gone through three sets of OEM tires and am currently riding on Conti’s.

I just did a drive to Florida and back from Niagara Falls area in Ontario. I had no issues with the stock tires. Even in overcast raining on and of all the way down. Sure i wasnt flying or setting any land speed records but the tires shocked me on how good they still were. If you keep off the gas and respect the weather conditions your fine.

Now when i was in Florida and the water had no where to go and it downpoured... yess a little hydroplaning happened. I mean i had to drop down to 20mph on the highway. There was nothing i could do to keep the car from doing that, so that sucked and was the worst part of the driving. But after putting 2.4kmiles on the car in a week. I full understand it and have no issues with the stock tires.

I will be switching them out once they are worn out though for something a little more weather friendly but i have no issues with the stocks until they need replacing.

I think ill be going Conti once i need to.

Honestly I think the stock tires would be a hard sell on any market unless you offer them up at a steal. Trying to sell a new tire that you don't want leaves you with a small market to sell them to. Most of us wouldn't buy them. The only person that would be interested is someone who's getting rid of their car and want to be able to say they have new tires.
Honestly I plan to keep my stock tires until they're do to be replaced. I may not like them, but I figure why not keep them on until I burn them up?

I really don't believe that a tire produced today will only last for 7K miles unless they're abused.

I got between 10-11,000 miles out of all three sets. The fronts wore faster, probably because I don’t do burnouts much but do like aggressive cornering.

To the Op, I would keep the GYs on the car and drive them until they’re just about worn out. When I bought my low mileage used 2017 ZL1 back in 2019 with 425 miles I got around 12,000 miles out of the OEM GYs and had them replaced with another set. Like others have noted don’t try and set a land speed record when driving in wet conditions or cold weather. I drive my ZL1 in cold weather but take it easy until the tires get heat in them and grip better.
