Funny you mention this, as I was just thinking about this today. This setup comes as an option on the 2023 Camaro. I don't know if this could be successfully retrofitted to our cars though. Maybe as an aftermarket option it could be done.

Basically you can hit a button to switch between regular rear view mirror or full time rear view camera, which takes up the entire screen of the mirror. Cool stuff.

Rearview mirror cameras have some distinct advantages over traditional rearview mirrors. They provide a wider field of view than traditional mirrors, which can help drivers see more of what’s behind them1. They also eliminate blind spots and can help drivers see around obstacles like passengers or cargo1. However, mirror cameras have some distinct disadvantages. They’re more expensive to buy and replace. Since cameras are more complex than simple mirrors, they’re more likely to malfunction, and replacing them is not as easy as swapping the broken mirror.

For what it's worth, I did this on my Z/28 and I love it. It is amazing on the track as I don't have to try to look through the roll bar, tint, and wickerbill. It is a pretty sweet feature for driving on the road too.

Glad you liked it. I have had it on two of my Camaros and never used it. Found it to be for me, pretty useless. And they took out the garage door openers to install this in the newer GEN6 cars from the factory.

Had a friend who installed one on his 5th gen that he sold, said he like it but also had problem with either glare from people's headlights and such or just nighttime driving in general, can't remember the specifics though.

I can't speak much for the wideview full camera mirror add-on. I have an early Ofer setup which uses only part of the mirror when backing up. Otherwise it's just a mirror.

The wife has one on her CT5-V and I have one on the GMC Denali. I like the fact the cameras are adjustable and wider field of vision. LED lamps from cars behind though will flicker at you in the camera mirrors. Kinda strange looking but I'm used to it.

If I didn't already have a rear view camera and had the option to add the full view mirror to our 2010 SS, I'd say yes.

Is it a genuine one or just a generic one you add to the top of the mirror? I don't have any glare. Granted I don't drive the car much, so I haven't had a big truck behind me with LEDs but I know it's not any worse than having a normal mirror. Normal headlights though are totally fine with driving. And the night time is pretty clear as it is. It's not any worse than a normal mirror and looking through 5% tint. But it's no night vision. Mine is the Genuine GM Mirror and antenna. Not a generic after market one.

Not really sure, it was an early 5th gen and don't know what it would take to wire a GM one to those, he like it overall but I didn't look too much into it, I already have a camera mounted to the licence plate for parking lots. I can definitely see the appeal though, rearview mirrors in these cars, as they are, are at best a suggestion.

Having one in my Denali, I really wish I had one in the Camaro. Not sure I am ready to drop that much coin on an OEM setup.

unless I am missing something, you should be able to take any rear view camera and instead of it going hot only in reverse, have the power wire to a switched on source and whenever the car is on, the camera is activated.
