Help! Moving due to new job and much longer commute, what to do with Z?
I'm moving soon and will have a much longer commute (55 miles round trip vs 13 miles round trip) and will no longer have a garage. I will be in a very safe neighborhood so I'm not too worried about safety of the car.
Problems with this... - Do I want to run up the mileage on the ZL1? (currently under 5k miles in 9+ months of ownership) - I'll be using 3-4 gallons of gas per day vs. ~1, would be nice to have something more fuel efficient but I don't want to drive a beater - will not have a garage spot but will have off-street parking (very urban environment). Do I want it sitting outside all winter? Also the effect of salt on the car Thoughts? If your Camaro is not your daily driver, what do you have that is a fun and reliable daily driver, hopefully with good MPGs? |

i have a 2000 GMC Sierra AWD with 4 studded snows. 1 The tires on the ZL1 should not see temps under 40 degrees. GM and Goodyear say they can crack. DO NOT DRIVE ON THEM BELOW 40. You would need to find 4 snow tires to keep it on the road in the winter. I wouldnt drive a ZL1 in the winter but it can be done with 4 snows I guess. Cant realy be done were i live unless you like to be stranded in your house or at work because the plow only comes through at 7 am and the snow is already 3 feet deep. 3 times last winter i had to drive in snow over the bumper of my truck.

I should have bought a ZL1

sell it before the car depreciates even more with high mileage and who knows what kind of damage the paint will occur when left outside like that. Here in Cali we have seen rain maybe 2 times in the last year.

The reason I ask, is the amount of gas you will be burning due to the increased mileage?? (COST) if so.....go head and trade in the Z28 and get a new Corvette, I did that the first part of this year. my commute is 50 EACH way every day......and its my daily driver. I had a V6 Camaro AND a V6 Caddy.....and my gas mileage INCREASED over the two.....(getting an average of 28 mpg going back and forth to work) and getting LOTS of PERM-A-GRIN!!

A Malibu or Cruze should do the trick. Its a given that ZL owners may need a beater for daily transportation.
Edit: If you can afford it, look into renting a garage space if weather factors will harm the ZL. At the very least, buy yourself a very good car cover.

Couldn't you put the car into storage for the winter? Might be a good idea to keep it off of the street during that time. Then get a winter beater, if you can afford it. I drive my SS year round, no funds for beater lol
