ZL1 1LE Wing Install DIY

I'm mid-process of doing the ZL1 1LE aero on my ZL1 and I wanted to share my process of installing the ZL1 1LE wing on my car. I watched the only video I could find on the subject and while the Video was very helpful to start, I found it lacking in ideal guidance on the R&R of the ZL1 wing. Not a clear set of steps and a really bad technique was used prying the wing off instead of heating the double-sided tape to make a clean and easy release.

(quick note: I really appreciate the video and will add this DIY/Link in the comments on Youtube, but all things can be improved)

After watching the video, please follow these steps:

Tools needed:

- Heat gun
- 10mm 1/4 drive socket (swivel)
- 10mm gear drive wrench with a flexible head
- Large Bath towel
- Small towels x 2
- Painter Tape

1) Remove the inside trunk lid liner & Place Large towel over the trunk latch
2) Back out all 6 anchoring bolts to the last 2 threads
3) Visually locate the white plastic retaining anchors (these are connected to the OEM wing)
4) Use painters tape to protect your trunk lid on both sides of all 3 wing anchor points
5) Use a heat gun to evenly and thoroughly heat all 6 mounting points (you want the underside surface just too hot to touch with your bare skin)
6) Gently pry the OEM wing up by hand, double-sided tape should immediately release some, if it doesn't add more heat
7) Gently rock the OEM wing fore & aft to release all of the double-sided tape
8) Remove 5 of the 6 anchoring bolts, leaving the easiest middle bolt in place with just 2 threads holding it on.
9) Use a flat blade screwdriver or other tools to release the white plastic retainer on one side of the OEM wing. (it's okay to break it, won't be used again)
10) Use a small towel to keep the wing/plastic retainer from resetting into the deck lid hole.
10) Repeat step 9 on the opposite side.
11) Remove the middle bolt and slowly/carefully lift OEM wing off the deck lid
12) Clean and Polish the deck lid surface
13) Remove double sided tape backing from 1LE wing
14) Deploy wing into Deck Lid, it can really only go in one way, be careful go slow and don't scratch anything
15) With everything aligned, press the wing down on the decklid lightly (5lb of pressure from the mount points (NOT THE WING) to get a good initial seat.
16) Get the 6 anchor nuts in place and gently tighten them from the inside out positions, slowly, to suck the wing fully into place. Be smart, go slow, these don't need to have a lot of torque, inch lbs here not sure of the exact spec, but very snug.
17) COMPLETE

Hope this helps someone out there!

Damn it looks killer on NFG! And ignore the peanut gallery that will likely be showing up to tell you the wing will destroy your decklid. Not a single person has provided any evidence of such, and the trunks are visually identical on 2017/2018 Cars. (If yours happens to be a 2017 That is)

The creator of that video is on this forum BTW. Same
Screen name. Watch his firearm videos from time to time over the years.

Peanut Gallery will come spewing misinformation as they always do and the trunk will be fine as it is the same trunk on a 1LE and yes I have a 2018 car.

The guy who made the video is awesome and I'm very thankful for him, but there is a slightly better way to get do the swap and I wanted to share it.

Nice!

Off topic question... I'm ordering a cover, what is the wing height (deck lid to wing top)?

I'm unable to find by searching forums.

Thanks in advance.

So I've finished up the Canard install and after a few days thinking it over, I think I'm going to stick with the base splitter because I think it just looks better.

The ZL1 1LE splitter (to me and just my opinion) doesn't look great. So I've decided I will run an ARP Splitter for the base ZL1 on track days but keep the stocker as the mosaic black paint also flows the rest of the body.

Time to enjoy the car!

Looks great, and damn you were close to closing the door on your rear end..I have already :(

After installing the canards, did it seem like you could have done so over the DRLs? Perhaps a small "notch" could have been carved if it would have rubbed? I'm wondering how that would look.

Oh , and great detail on the install writeup. Can the mods make this a sticky?
