Volt gage question

What is typical reading for the voltage gage when driving?
I notice my gage is at the very bottom of the grey band area closer to 10 than 15.
I could have sworn when I fort got the car it was up by 15.
Have 2017 2ss with about 1200 miles on it now.

They ALL move around between 9 and 15 volts. The body control Mod. Controls it to supply the Car with only as much power as it needs. (saves on Gas) Its NORMAL, Now ENJOY that New Car!!!!

It is NOT normal to drop below 12 volts. Intelligent charging does not mean it will let the voltage drop down near 10 volts. For reference mine stays around 14 volts.

These newer cars have variable displacement electrical systems. They only deleiver full power from the alternator when needed. Depending on the electrical load demand you may see the voltage sit in the lower range on the gauge. If you are driving with the headlights on, heated seats, etc. you should see the voltage level at around 14v or so but if the electrical load is lighter then you see the gauge read in the 10-12v range.

It drops to near 10 when you're not looking. Seriously.

10.6 - 14.8 is the full operational range of a car's electrical system with variable charging. My radar detector has a digital volt meter and it will dip to 10.6 on every car I've had it on in the last 8 years.

So this morning I was actively looking you are are correct. Mine was well below 14v. It hovered around 12volts most of the drive to work. I still do not think 10volts would be good at all. Since it is a volt meter and not a charging meter you would never want to see your battery below 12 volts. But I now see that the car doesn't try to stay at 14volts all of the time like cars of the past.

The only time I would expect to see < 12v is if the battery has discharged and the alternator is not charging or during cranking to turn the engine on or maybe you have a massive subwoofer and insufficient capacitor.

To see less than 12v means the battery is not fully charged and the alternator isn't charging it ...which would be odd behavior since variable charging would not want to allow the battery to discharge, rather it wants to keep it perpetually fully charged.

I've not seen my info console show me anything less than 12v during operation. But then I haven't been watching it every time i drive all the time i drive to say for sure what its behavior has been.

On the volt gage in the display, what voltage is the lowest end of the grey zone supposed to represent?

Exactly, why couldn't GM put 1 volt steps instead of this strange 1.2v or so steps. I think it's around 11v or so.

I had the same problem with mine. I checked it with a volt meter and it showed 12.2v while it was running and it showed charging to be 12.2. A fully charged battery is 12.6v (2.1v per cell 6 cells.) this is not normal. After turning vehicle off it is still 12.2v and checking hours later it was still 12.2v. This is only 70-80% charged. it is true that the alternator will reduce amp output to a fully charged battery when fully charged and no load but under 12.6v is not charging the battery. I brought mine to the dealer and they tested the battery and found a dead cell. The new Camaros have an AGM battery and there is a special test procedure to test this battery. There is a TSB on this and the dealer must follow a very specific test procedure to warranty battery. AGM batteries can be very difficult to charge when they are low and will not charge with a standard battery charger when really low. There are numerous internet posts to google on charging a dead AGM battery. Have the dealer check it, its brand new and under warranty its free.

I thought only the 1LT/2LT had AGM batteries and the SS trims had standard batteries?
