If I went the '21 LT1, I would probably do Recaros NPP and tech, I think that is still under 1SS price, but over a "16-'18 loaded 2SS.
You have to ask yourself how important a factory warranty is.

Are you capable of doing almost everything yourself & can you afford to have things fixed you aren’t capable of doing, etc? Or do you even want to?

Since I"m looking for a convertible, I waited for winter, thinking I'd get a better deal, but there just aren't many verts with an M6 on the used market.
Ive found that CR likes cars like prius... and dislikes F-250s... Suburbans... and Camaros. I wouldnt trust a word they say. Seems to me they are politically driven wherever there is a product that has political conotations.
Also, I did the same thing. I found a 2020 2SS 6 mt, vert at my local dealer. They had a few things going the end of the year and the car I bought was built in July. There was much discussion about valve spring failures. But its pretty much all the small block V-8 GM engines. I did get an extended warrantee more for the Ragg Top than anything else.
I dont know if I got the best deal but I paid 46 on a sticker over 53 grand.
Only have 400 miles so far. Just puut winter tires on it. And starting April 1 my wife will be daily driving it.

I know there are tons of threads on this, and I searched and read a bunch, but wanted input from the masses on:
1. Are there actually problems with the 2017/2018 SS's? (not the transmission, I'm an M6 dude)

I'm a CR subscriber and have access to the reviews and reliability ratings. I don't see the horrible reviews you're talking about? Can you post a quote or section where CR pans the 2017/18 Camaro?

The summary of their road test is:

"Undoubtedly, the Camaro is a real treat."

Like every other reviewer, they do pan the visibility:

"However, the packaging suffers from overt flaws that may turn away some buyers. Visibility remains dreadful, making it hard to see stoplights, merge or park. Fortunately, the car includes a rear backup camera, along with parking assist and rear cross-traffic alert -- all systems you need with this coupe."

Overall owner satisfaction is 3/5 for the 2017 and 4/5 for the 2018. In particular, satisfaction with Driving Experience is 100/100 for the 2017 and 82/100 for the 2018.

Reliability is N/A for 2018. Not enough data. For the 2017 it is bad: 1/5 overall. The major highlighted trouble spot is the automatic transmission. But they also list the suspension, brakes, and body integrity as trouble spots.

But going back to the review, it was a positive review, especially for the driving experience. Can you share the negative parts of the review that you read?

Yeah, a Hyundai is more reliable.

They lost all credibility right there.

Sounds like you are best off buying a used 2SS from what you say. You said you prefer leather, and heated seats so that says 2SS is the only option for you. If you’re looking for an automatic get a 2019-2020 for the A10.

Okay, so that's why I was confused. Their review, the subjective part, is the road test. And they scored the Camaro 3rd best on that page with 85. Only the Supra and BMW Z4 scored higher. Dodge Challenger scored the worst in their subjective review.

The other stuff is objective data, not their opinion. They just collect the data. The owner satisfaction looks good, but the reliability drags down the Camaro to last place. Not sure how you really can argue with that.

My 2018 has been trouble-free and I replied to their survey with the highest marks for reliability, but I'm just one owner. Apparently there are a lot of survey responses that listed problems.

I think they weigh things like fuel economy in the reliability score.
If you get 16 mpg that equates to bad reliability.
Conjecture of course.

OP, it just boils down to how comfortable you are with a used sports car. It helps for you to buy privately as you can have a better idea of what the previous owner is like.

The real joke? Any BMW.

Yeah, good luck trying to convince me or any human being with at least one active brain cell that any BMW is reliable.

I think the thing that hurt the Camaro is probably the A8 transmission. Since OP is getting the M6, I don't think that will matter.

Does anyone know how CR calculate their reliability score?

If it's based on the number of service visits, without any qualification, then it may not mean much. People who love their sports cars will take them to the dealership for everything, including panel gaps, alignment every x months, minor steering column adjustments, software updates etc. (assuming they don't want to or cannot work on their cars themselves), most of which has nothing to do with reliability per se.

Except for the trans flush that fixed the A8 shudder, I haven't had a single problem with my '18 RS. Other than a sunroof, the auto trans and the RS package, there are no other options, which means fewer opportunities for something to go wrong.

I'm not a big fan of sports cars optioned like luxury cars. The Camaro is a sports car, not a GT.
