Check your axle nuts.

Another pubic service announcement from ole shithead.

Got 5k on my car, spirited, you might say. Passenger rear axle nut was 15 degrees loose from the torque mark. No big deal if you can torque it down, but keep an eye on it, these things ain't staked.

*the more you know...*

Did you hear a clicking sound. I think my came loose and i took my canaro to the dealer but they didnt solve the noise. Did you just retorque the axle nut or replace it?

No noise, no weirdness or indication anything was wrong. Just noticed it doing a routine inspection.

We just re-torqued it to around 250 ft-lbs and put a new torque mark on it.

The big fat 36mm nut that keeps your axle and hub um, on.

Not to be confused with lug nuts, jam nuts, or deez nuts.

I needed a laugh and most respectfully appreciate the humor used...

I checked mine. The nuts are staked, but the drivers side was backed off almost 1/4 turn from the factory mark. I didn't check the passenger side cause I figured I would just take it in and have service check and tighten both sides. I called two local dealers and they both gave me a "what are we supposed to do" attitude.

I bought my car (used) 16 in August, it had 14,800 miles on it. I pulled the rear wheels off to check something else, and found the right rear nut backing off by several turns. I torqued it and staked it. The left wasn't loose, but I staked it as well.

old thread but the 17 gm shop manual calls for 180lbft for the new style nut. but the manual is f ed up because it starts talking about thread locker after putting the nut on then goes right into the inner bolts.

What is the proper torque for these nuts? I have a 2020 2SS (not a 1LE).

Also, is there a hole in the axle that a cotter pin can be placed as the nut is crowned?

My passenger side one appears to have backed off 5-10° from the torque mark...

there is no cotter pin. if yours backed off you can take it back to the dealer to have them replace and properly torque a new nut under warranty. the nut has to be replaced. If you decide to do it yourself I can get the part number and torque spec for you. I just dont have time to search for it now in the shop manual. The nut is not expensive and easily done yourself.

Can I not just tighten the existing nut? It is only backed off a few degrees...
