Transmission temp operation question
Just curious what the normal operation of the transmission temp should be?
Should it warm up like coolant and hold at a level? Should it always be low, 100*? Does it take a long road trip just to warm up? Thanks |

Mine is new and haven't been able to track it yet (April, wahoo!), but driving spiritedly on back roads, the trans temp hasn't gone above 100 yet (left edge of the scale). I'm assuming that on track with constant red-line pulls and higher speeds, trans temps will rise to at least the middle of the scale, hopefully to be held in check by the trans cooler.

It should slowly go up to at least 130-140 during normal driving. Even idling for 20-25 minutes would bring the trans temperature up near this range (this is what the A8/A10 requires for fluid level check and flush at the dealership), see also this video.
I don't recall my A8 ever reaching temps above 150-ish on the street, and based on what I read about typical temperatures on track, that should be around 190-200. These numbers may be slightly different for the A10.

Thanks. Most of the time mine stays at 100 on the left. Although the other day sitting in traffic it did climb up, but I don't remember how high. I will continue to monitor.

We should probably clarify. My car has an M6, not an auto. Not sure if the OP was asking about M6 or auto, but I'd not be surprised if the auto has different operating temp characteristics, even while idling or puttering around.

M6 in mine and will start to climb above 100˚ when it's over 50˚ ambient and driven for a couple hours.
Example, Sunday had the car out for four hours, it was 75˚ ambient, and after climbing a "mountain" the trans was about 150˚. At the bottom after coming down the mountain it was 130˚. This was Blue mountain in eastern PA, a hill for you western folk.
