Valve stem leaking air
Hi guys, hoping to get some insight. I still have the OEM tpms sensors on my 16' camaro. The tires got swapped in December and I brought the car home and it has sat in the garage because of winter ever since. About a week ago the front right was leaking air crazy quick, we could hear it airing out, so we jacked the car up and took the wheel off. When we push the valve stem to the side air comes rushing out more and then tilt it to the other side and it slows down. I called a few places to change it but need some help. First can the valve stem be swapped without changing the tpms sensor? One of the tire companies near here said if they can change the valve without the sensor they will do it for 21 dollars, but if it can't be serviced wseparately then it's gonna be over $100, so can the stem be serviced separately from the tpms sensor? Second question does anybody have any recommendations to the best places to get it changed? I live in PA and we have a lot of your run of the mill shops like Mavis, Jack Williams etc..., I have custom brushed bronze wheels and I don't want crap service that leads to chipped wheels etc, any help would be greatly appreciated!

$100??? I just saw somewhere online that an OEM TPMS is like $30!
It's the whole unit, stem and all. Buy it yourself and take it to a tire shop where they *should* swap it for maybe $20? They shouldn't even have to rebalance the wheel if they mark the tire and reinstall it in the same place. Then it's just a quick reprogram of the TPMS's. Same tire shop can do it or take it to your usual dealer and ask them to do it. Takes maybe two minutes. They walk around the car with the wireless programmer after you hit the reprogram function in your DIC. Last time I had to do it was when the tire shop didn't bother to reprogram my wife's CTS after getting all new tires, and they didn't return the wheels to the previous positions. I could have taken it back but it was easier to take it to our Caddy dealer, where the service writer grabbed the tool and walked around the car for me. No charge.

There should be nothing wrong with the sensor, they screw on. I have had mine off and on several times and haven't had one damaged yet. Rock Auto sensor $20-50 if needed.

There are 1pc sensors where the whole piece will need replaced. Then, there are 2 pc sensors where just the valve stem is able to be separated from the valve body and replaced. I believe our's are the 1 pc type. Probably around $30-$50. Not familiar with shops around you, as I'm not from there. Any reputable tire shop could handle for you, no problem.

The tire shop is responsible for damaging your valve stems.
On the other hand, replacing all your sensors and stems would not be a bad thing after four years. |

It looks like the stem and TPMS are separate items. The OEM stem is around $10 online. Maybe buy one from the local dealership so it matches your other stems/wheels.
