If over penetration is an issue (and seeing from your sig you have a lot of houses around) a shotgun would be a no go for me. Shotguns and pistols have the most over penetration and a very high risk of hurting your neighbors. An ar15 actually would be a better choice since it has the lowest over penetration (once the bullet hits the first side of sheet rock the bullet will tumble and most of the time get stopped in the second wall. Fourth piece of sheet rock assuming it doesn't hit any studs).

Now lets talk ammo. Bird shot as defense ammo is a joke. If bird shot is all you can get right now, you're better off with a .22 rifle. Need at least 00 buck with slug being preferred but again both have over penetration issues.

Thanks for the tips. I do appreciate them. I'm no longer in that house and now have .5 acres from the next houses and a log cabin home. My stand far as home defense is my stairwell which the bad guy has to come up and just a narrow passage, so favor is in my book.
I really wish I could go ar15, but with my wife not having knowledge about it (I've used it in combat in OIF1), she is just scared to death about them.
I'll keep my eyes open for 00 buckshot or slug since they're more for stopping power. Thank you again for those tips.

If you're going w/ a shottie skip the slugs. Over penetration and only one projectile. 00 is much better.

I was recently watching Massad Ayoob. He recommends a pistol as 1st choice for home defense. Shotgun is #2.

Bird shot close range is usable, though not ideal. You can turn them into slug like projectiles with wax if done right.

Have your wife shoot a 12ga with full power slug or buck shot, then a .223/5.56 back to back.
This might change her mind.

I don't like a pump for home defense as you need two hands to operate, and it holds less ammo than just about anything else, and generally reloads one round at a time.

You might need one hand to do/hold something, or may have lost use due to injury.
Shot gun has a decent kick, not fun one handed let alone solo weak handed.

AR has 30 rounds.
Quick reload if you manage to go through 30 rounds, somehow.
Light recoil, easy one handed operation, either hand.

Recent events confirm it does it's intended job.

i was building up a good ammo stockpile,500 rounds of 9mm for 90 bucks,556 was 69 bucks for 150 rounds(good times) then my wife started acting like she was going to go all RED FLAG on me so i chilled out......BOY WHAT A MISTAKE!
i just like to go shooting with my friends every other weekend now i'm holding onto what i have left likes it's platinum.
i did score 800 rounds of green tip last week at academy-100 bucks for 200 rounds then i found 200 rounds of tula 223 for 70 bucks. so i may or may not have broke in a new AR with it that i mighta purchased.

Just ordered a Ruger PC Charger.

We'll see if I can find a TF1913 brace for it before the ATF decides it's a no-no.

The AR pistol won't be going anywhere. They have been around for a long time, manufacturers just used a padded buffer tube. It's the pistol brace that may become hard to get.

call me a conspiracy psycho but I am a firm believer in the deep state, democrat is just a nice name for a socialist and they fully intend on taking away our guns.

It appears the demand on ammo has increased again.
