Rollcage
Found a little loose change in my sofa and was thinking of putting a rollcage in my daily driven ZL1. Anyone have any experience with doing that.

word of warning, in the event of an accident/ rollover that cage can do more damage to your skull! now if you wear helmet your good. I always thought cage would add the "safety" and cool factor to street car. I decided against one in my P/T 69 trans am I'm building

Ya, not sure why you would want one in a DD?? PITA to get in and out of on a daily basis..Plus unless you are racing it every weekend under 11.50 its not really necessary ( I know summit series points says under 10.0 for 2008 and newer, but its ultimately up to the track)

Dont do it, its not practical for a daily and like someone else said if your not wearing your helmet it can do more harm than good.

1) "plug and play" or "kit" cages usually suck. They are cookie cutter and leave you with less room, forcing you to move to a custom cage
2) Lots of time and lots of money. A custom cage install can mean leaving your car at a shop for 2-3 months, if we're talking a full cage. 3) Have you ever tried to get in a car with a door bar? Not only will it make your backseats useless, your front seats limited adjustability, and squeeze everywhere but getting in and out can be a process and a total pain. No. |

I know someone who has a full professionally installed roll cage. I was surprised how they had to destroy the interior of the car to add the cage. I would guess your resale value would drop significantly if you ever decided to sell it. I do not think it is one of those mod's that would be desirable as people will assume you were spraying in order to get <10sec.
and yes, his seats are fixed, back seat gone, and carpeting looks rough. |

I've considered this, and concluded that I wouldn't want one in a street situation at all. As stated above, it actually increases the potential for head injuries unless you're using a helmet, harnesses, etc.

RPM roll bar makes a nice unit. I've driven a street car with a 6 point, as long as the side bars are swing out, not a big deal. You can always just take the side bars out and re-install on track day.
Access to back seat will be restricted to grocery bags though, if you still pack the kids in the back from time to time, they better have spines made of rubber. RPM can set you up with a removable set up like the photos below, but it is not NHRA legal, I believe it is for SCCA, but double check with your local track first. |

RPM rollbars are all available as NHRA legal..They do have options though for non-legal SCCA roll bars as well. I agree I dont have a problem getting in and out my first gen with a 6 pt roll bar, but first gens are alot easier to get in and out of regardless of roll bar. I dont think at my height i would enjoy crawling over bars in my ZL1..unless you get the removable door bar option as you mentioned
