Correct Oil Filter?

Hey guys,

I picked up a used ‘19 ZLE a few weeks ago and finally got around to the first oil change this afternoon (since it was used - better safe than sorry). I bought the car from a dealer in Georgia, and the car had only 614 miles on it this afternoon when I changed the oil. I don’t really know anything about the history of the car in it’s first roughly 550 miles.

When I changed the oil and filter this afternoon, the oil filter on the car was a black AC Delco UPF64R. I looked through both the Camaro owner’s manual and the High Performance supplement and both of them list the regular PF64 as the correct oil filter. Is it possible the UPF64R was installed at the factory, or is it more likely that the original owner installed it? Can anyone provide insight as to why it was on there? It was definitely more robust than the regular PF64.

Any insight you can provide is very much appreciated.

The R is a newer design. Both are fine with regular oil changes. Additional info here: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...lter-pics.html

I have use both and everything is still good, Dealer parts said it is the correct one with the R so it is on them if something should go wrong which is very unlikely > oil pressure is still the same no rattles . I would not be concern about which one to use.

The only concern I have with the R filter is that the drain holes appear smaller, with these monster 6.2 motors flowing 10 qts of oil and doing that at high Gs on banked ovals without a dry sump, I wonder if better flow with larger holes is a bonus.

As long as the R filter is listed as a replacement/usable filter by GM to the standard filter then you have no concerns/worries.

I believe the bypass valve setting on the UPF64/UPF64R is 35psi instead of the recommended 22 psi on the PF64.

With the higher bypass pressure it would be possible to create oil starvation under certain conditions. I don't know how likely that would be to actually happen.

My wife and I do plan to track the car a couple of times per year. When we do I’ll switch to the recommended 15w50 oil. I guess I’m just wondering if that filter was put on the car from the factory, or more likely done by the dealer I bought it from. The car fax did not show any service on the car in the 550 miles before I bought it. And I would think the higher bypass pressure would be a potential problem, especially on a ZLE on the track.

PF64 is preferable due to the drain holes mentioned above. Since it is in the printed supplement, I'm using that filter only. The dealer stated the service tech was pleased to see a PF64 in place when my oil pump failed.
