Best throttle body for basically stock manual zl1?

I know that doing a throttle body is a very popular/good mod when people are getting more serious about making power. For mine, I'm trying to stay content with the car while keeping the warranty intact. I'd still like to make a bit more power, but more importantly, just want the car to drive as well as possible. Is there a good throttle body that will help response a bit, especially on the manual equipped cars, and that works with the stock blower and no tune? I had a Soler one on my c7 auto, and while it was totally plug and play with no drama, I also can't really say that I noticed any difference in response or drivability.

Stock until you port the blower and open up the snout, after that a NW 103mm.

I agree.

I have tried ported throttle bodies on multiple Camaros and pickups. Each time I returned back to the stock throttle body because of drivability issues. It's either been a check engine light or rpm hunting at idle.

Stick with the stock throttle body until you're ready to port the blower opening.

For stock, you can buy the LT5 95mm TB from Jannetty racing. Its bolton but might need some tuning to take full advantage. Stock is 87mm I believe. To run the 103mm as said you'd need the blower snout ported.

There is nearly no gain from mods’ without mod’ing the ECM/TCM. Changing airflow with disrupt the airflow model and you’ll probably hurt power more than making it. You might be lucky to NOT LOSE power because of timing retard or throttle closure.

Probably - the most effecting thing to start with IS a tune. There are already torque limits within the stock tune that you might be able to get full power out of what you already have (e.g. there are certain A10 gears that limit torque in the stock tune that can be improved for full power).

Unless you plan on mod’ing in the future - I wouldn’t waste money/time on anything until you crack into the ECM/TCM. Until then - you won’t make much power, if any more, than you do now.

I can't believe a larger TB will be of any meaningful benefit to a stock engine

I will for sure go and buy Tony Mamo's 87 Ported TB! I actually tested this on the dragstrip with my buddys Zl1. He had a stock TB with a Roto-Fab Intake. I had Tony's TB with the Roto-Fab intake. We both had the same fuel. My buddy got 11.1 @ 126 MPH and I got 11.4 @ 128 MPH. A 2mph gain is very impressive if you ask me.

No way that's from a TB. There's that much margin of difference in two stock cars.

Adding a TB to a Rotofab on an un-tuned ZL1 will almost always make it worse.

99.9% of the time, changing hardware on a stock LT4 engine will either do a) nothing, or b) harm. The other 0.1% of the time it's dyno error. If you mod the intake (OP has a Rotofab), changing the TB will sometimes throw codes as you drive the intake system out of calibration.

The car already comes with 3 throttle maps. See also this useful bit of youtubing from EE, then you can decide which "response" you're looking to improve. Tip in, Tip out, linearity, non-linearity, etc.

For me, just tweaking the airflow in the tune on all stock hardware was an improvement in driveability. Subjective per person per car I suppose, but it was like a different car for me after spending a little time with VVE and the MAF transfer function.

Thanks for the info. I know that tuning is really the best option, and not much can be accomplished without it. However, the RS3 is already modded to shit and out of warranty. Part of the reason I talked myself into getting the zl1, and wife allowed it, is because it already had 650hp and I could enjoy it while still keeping it mostly stock/under factory warranty. Sadly, that has now proven to be untrue, as the quest for more power always wins the day - history repeats itself LOL

Haters will say there are no gains, but here are dyno numbers:

https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=550516

Side note, I was able to hit 150.5 MPH in an airstrip attack with this setup, and ended up pulling a modded auto ZL1 which was unexpected.

Umm huh? there are a ton of ZL1's out there running this exact combination of a standard rotofab and mamo throttle body with 0 issues.....
