Oil type for 2012 ss

I was wondering if you guys recommended another viscocity oil for my 6 spd 2012 2ss. Its an ls3 I know it recommends 5w30 but I didn't know if you guys recommended another viscocity. The reason I ask is because my truck runs 5w30 but I've heard people say to put 10w30 in it just because the motor runs better on it in the long run. I might sound stupid im sorry dont bash me. Just need help.

I would recommend using what your manual tells you. 5w30.

I would stick with the 5w30, no reason to change it. Besides, the 10W is just the cold viscosity, so it is very close to the 5w your manual specs for, and nearly identical at operating temperature.

I run 10w30 Amsoil Z-Rod in mine, but it's in a rebuilt LS3 with a cam. If Amsoil made Z-Rod in a 5w I would likely be running that. But since they don't I run the closest thing, which is the 10w30.

I have a '13 LFX and run Amsoil 5W30 XL (the middle grade of Amsoil, just a step below the Signature Series). I drive A LOT of highway miles and change the oil every 12K. I have over 151,300 miles on the car now and it still runs like a top.

GM probably doesn't care if your motor makes it to 200,000 miles, just past the warranty. I would run the best brand oil possible and for a close tolerance V8 5W20 would be my go to. If it had a lot of miles then 5W30.

My LFX gets the 0W16 for direct injection motors.
Yeah, GM used the wrong oil in these too.

Edit- 0W16 not 0W6.

I've heard this statement said about older vehicle engines, but it is a thing of the past. Modern engines require light synthetic oil and are very sensitive to the viscosity, at least what I've been told by my mechanic buddies. As such, I always (always) use the recommended viscosity.

I see much thicker weights are recommended for the track by GM and builders. I was thinking of going to a 5W 40 in a top tier oil ( Sig Series ) I only drive my car in the warm weather and believe a lot of wear occures at start up which would still be a 5 W.

The higher warm weight is probably due to the expected increased running temperature on the track so that the 40 viscosity when operating at the higher temp is the same as 30 under "normal" conditions. I'm not sure that you will see a high enough temperature in NY in normal road use to justify. Maybe during a heat wave in southern Arizona.

As an "old" guy I'm having flashbacks to starting my car back in the very early '80s on those cold winter mornings in N.E. Ohio and the gauge reading zero oil pressure for a few seconds then SLOWLY climbing running dino oil. Cringe worthy noises from under the hood compared to today. I still remember that first change to synthetic and having instant oil pressure.
Simply magic at the time.
