Caliper Decals????

HIGH temperature BRAKE Caliper Decals ?????

Question here for the track rats that get their brake calipers EXTREMELY hot. I was going to re-powdercoat my front Zl1 calipers and was wondering what you guys used to put the ZL1 and BREMBO lettering back on the face of the caliper???

I couldnt tell if my STOCK ZL1 calipers had the lettering PAINTED on from the factory or do they use decals as well???

I see various HIGH TEMP decals being offered but will they hold up to the amount off heat that a robust track day provides?????
If SO....then whose decals did you use???

When I painted my calipers I used Brembo stickers from Amazon and then used high temp clear over the top.

I had a track day where I did 7 20 minute sessions and the brakes did get pretty hot, stickers still look great.

No problem with the stickers, but I would have Cerakote applied instead of powder coat. It will stand up to the heat and brake fluid whereas the powder coat won’t.

Ha, Greg, with the way you are flying and the TX heat these days, I'm not sure what will hold up on the calipers. LOL. FWIW, I had them on my factory 4p brembos, before i switched brakes. Had them about about one season. Didn't melt them. Picked them up off of Amazon i think and didn't clear over them. But your experience may vary. ;-)

Well Eric,

I just put them on this weekend and I am going to track on Saturday for an SCCA Time trials so I will see if they hold up. I got them HERE:

https://www.etsy.com/shop/cardecals8...arch_query=ZL1

The 4 inch decals seemed to be the best size on the six piston front BREMBOS.

My thought:

If the caliper gets hot enough to melt the powder coat. What makes you think a sticker is going to hang around for any amount of time?

First off the calipers from the factory are PAINTED not powdercoated. The CALIPER WILL NEVER get hot enough to melt the powder coat I am running vented brake pistons like the Z06 do with their J57 option. I also am running titanium brake pad sims from Girodisc. I also am running GIRODISC front rotors which have superior cooling and are 5 pounds lighter. So with all this, it is NOT getting nearly as hot as the stock set up was.

The powdercoated rotors after some HARD track days DID NOT discolor like like the stock painted ZL caliper did so the heat is NOT affecting the powdercoating at all.

THATS how I know .

Any post starting with:

"First off..." or "Look..." i tend to ignore anyway. But let's press on, shall we?

What pads you running? I have the Ti shields too and ducting. Sh*t still gets toasty.

DTC70 and DTC60 pads. It gets hot no doubt but NOT as hot as it did before. I have a heat gun. Next time I am at track I will measure caliper temps. Melting point on powdercoat is roughly 300 degrees F.

Well I looked up the melting point of Cerakote and I was surprised to see it is between 500-600 degrees F which is TWICE what powdercoating is so you may be on to something there.

There are a lot of posts out there on this, I know I saw some on the Corvette forum when I was doing mine. Unfortunately mine were in for powder coat when I read about it’s heat limitations, but the final straw for me was when I went to assemble them and the brake fluid from the seals damaged the finish. I had them stripped a second time and went with Cerakote. The Cerakote is unaffected by brake fluid. Look for companies that do ceramic coated headers.

Ok looks like CERAKOTE is definitely the way to go. At the track this weekend I took some heat gun measurements of my calipers after a session and they were roughly 400 degrees. The powder coating DID NOT discolor.

The decals will hold up it looks like EXCEPT if you happen to brush against them when they are hot and they will come off like a prom dress if you arent careful. I did that to the driver side decal for example and it partially came off. Passenger side is fine though. Clear coat is probably a good idea and these werent.

The calipers were hotter towards the BOTTOM side of the caliper where the SMALLEST brake piston resides. The Caliper was the coolest by the TOP side of the caliper where the bleeder is and also where the LARGEST brake piston resides.
