Video: Borrowed a Friend's ZL1 1LE to Track
I was honored to drive David's Camaro ZL1 1LE at my home track. David was diagnosed with ALS three years ago and is no longer able to drive it.

IIRC, yours is a converted ZL1. Did you keep magride when you did conversion, and if so, what’s your thoughts on a converted ZL1 (tires, aero, magride) vs authentic ZLE now that you’ve ran both? I ran Road ATL this weekend on ZLE rims/3R’s with my ZL1, and was amazed how much they transformed the car. Kind of softens my buyers remorse at buying a non-ZLE.

The cars are extremely equivalent. This supports my and other’s hypothesis that the main performance improvements of the 1LE package are the aero and wheels/tires. It is more cost effective to buy a 1LE in the first place vs. what I've done. I wasn't pushing his car as hard as I push mine. Loosely data driven, mostly seat-of-the-pants opinions (I did compare the laps in Cosworth): 1. Braking was completely different, his car had DTC70/DTC60 Hawk pads with a totally different friction level. This took getting used to. I could eventually brake about 1/2 a marker deeper with the Hawk pads, but was potentially over slowing in some corners. 2. This was at a sold-out "Track Night in America" and I got 2-3 traffic free laps, v.s. a private track rental with zero traffic and two hours of track time. 3. I noticed no difference in the 325 rear 3R's vs. the 305 3R's in my car. 4. I could put more power out at corner exit on my car (don't know why, but I could, potentially alignment related) 5. The 1LE is more predictable and controllable at the limit or when sliding. 6. Straight-line acceleration was equivalent after adjusting for slower corner exit. 7. The difference in lap times would really come down to driver and track conditions. If there is enough interest, then I’ll do a video of the data with more details in a couple weeks.

Never got a chance to meet you at TT Nats.
And I've been beating the drum that the 3Rs are the majority of the performance difference from the beginning. Same with the G3s vs runflats when comparing SLE vs SS and sooooo many people hate me for speaking the truth. Non track people don't understand that tires are the most important non-driver mod. Hell an R-comp can make up for alot of driver mod too... Agreed that i probably wouldn't push a friends car as hard as my own Quote:
2. Yep, been in that situation lots of times. I am thinking of not going to TNiAs next year and picking out 3 or so better full track days to spend my money, time, and vacation days on. 3. Also good news as I will have a set of 305 square G3Rs next year. Hard to believe tho. 4. Probably the softer suspension making it easier to put the power down. 5. I would like to drive one. 6. Was this an A10 too? 7. Last edited by TheRealJA105; 10-29-2020 at 11:35 AM. |
