Gearing change.

Let me start up by saying I know NOTHING about this.

I was thinking about changing my auto to more aggressive gearing. Was just wondering what would have to be done: is it a simple tune or new tranny?

Also what would the cost range of such a thing be?

3.73 rear end gears and an install kit run about $780 from us, others will vary. A qualified shop, maybe even your dealer, can install them. A speedo correction is also needed.

I'd probably go with a 3.73 gear, maybe 4.10 I think that would be a good mix of increased performance and daily driveablity. You could get out of hole quicker for sure. Probably around $600+ for the gear swap including labor, unless of course you know someone who could do it.

The A6 transmission is geared lower than the M6 so 4.10 in the auto is too low. Stick to 3.73 in the auto.

Awesome.

I got a list of future mods, like headers/tune/cai, none of that will be effected by a new gear will it? I guess what I'm trying to say is that changing my gear to the 3.73 will not take away any of the performance gains of the above listed items?

Absolutely not. A more aggressive gear set will only make things better.

Awesome. One more question. Does playing with the gearing do anything warranty wise? Will GM try to get rid of my warranty over it? I know my dealership is cool and won't care, for they have told me numerous times, but I just want to know.

The only potential impact would be drive line after the rear end, therefore a snapped axle is the only thing they might have a solid case against. The whole "that will void your warranty" myth is exactly that, a myth. When you read or hear someone start that line, that is when you know they really don't know what they are talking about. They can only deny repairs if your mod caused the damage, they can't straight up void your warranty for any mod.

What's cruising RPM with a 3.73, say 70-75 mph?
