Another one bites The Dust

Well......Not a good weekend. Wrecked my 2SS RS M6 on friday. Broke all 4 wheels, 20" polished. They all snapped in the middle. Slid sideways into a curb after swerving to avoid Bambi. Then continued to slideinto some signs & 2 small trees, and then the final blow was the fire hydrant that hit the rear center, HARD. Much damage, Only the roof dosent need paint. The suspension in the front was ripped off of the drivers side :(.

Now the rest of the story. The adjuster has an initial repair estimate at only 18K but wants the body shop to remove more parts to get a better look. My body guy says that theres probably another 10K. & Thinks they should total it. Any one have experience with insurance companys if they dont want to total it? Can i fight to have it totaled? My guy says the car will never be right. It also only has 600 miles on it, and would have never seen more than that in any year. BTW no air bags went off at all, all the firemen, cops & bodyshop guys were surprised. Any advise would help. Pictures to follow.

if it is not totalled, you will be waiting months for parts!

You already have over 1/2 the vehicle cost in damages.. Should be considered Totaled easy.

If the air bags had gone off the car would be a total loss or at least a "constructive total loss". It depends on the Insurance company- It's at their discretion weather they total a car or not, and for them that's only dollars and sense. It also depends on the experience of the adjuster/appraiser they send out to look at your car. As an adjuster for many years I never wanter to "marry" a car- If the repairs get close to 50% a experienced adjuster will start to consider your car a Total loss. it also depends on the estimated salvage value. Does your car have a Good complete undamaged front end and engine ?. If it does the salvage value will be High. If not the salvage value will be limited. The co needs to close the gap between the ACV (actual cash value) and the salvage value. If the dollars don't add up they my elect to repair your car regardless what you or the shop suggests. If you really want it totalled, have your ins companies field supervisor have another look to get his opinion before repairs are started. Also, most good body shops will agree to "open Up" the car for an additional internal look before repairs are started as this will usually reveal additional damage which my push the car over into a total loss catagory............ Good luck.

Next time, just hit Bambi!

It's going to do less damage and be cheaper to fix. Besides, they make good jerky too.

Hope you are alright though. Airbags probably didn't deploy since it sounds like you didn't actually hit any sensor areas hard enough to trigger them. They won't go off if it doesn't detect a strong enough impact. Just be glad though, that would have required waiting for a new headliner, seat covers, steering wheel center and a new dash too. Although that might have been enough to push it into the "totalled" area for the insurance company.

This is actually incorrect. All insurance companies have different criteria to where they consider a car at a total loss. The industry standard is 75-80% repair cost to value. In your case factoring a $37,000 average 2SS RS cost, you would need to be between $27.750.00 and $29,600.00 worth of damage. If your airbags did not blow this will actually work against you as you would really like the car to be totalled. The airbags are an easy way to inflate the repair costs.

As for it never being the same again - this is 100% true. A car that has been in a wreck will never be the same again - it may look like it used to but it is impossible for it to be as it was prior to the accident.

My body shop thinks it will have a high salvage value because the motor & trans are fine and all the glass is fine & the interior is fine. However the front bumper, Grill & hood are damaged.

I hope you had "good" insurance, How much money did you have invested in the car? "The suspension in the front was ripped off of the drivers side" does sound good.
