Best Tires (Runflat) for my 2017 Camaro?
I was looking at my invoice from my last repair (the transmission flushed technique due to shudder) and saw a note on the paper that no one mentioned saying that all 4 tires are cracked heavily around the bead.
WTF? I hope this person is just an idiot trying to upsell me, but I've been worried that my hard cornering is wearing out the edges on the tires (I've tried to drive easier into the corners, but this thing handles so well I don't like to slow down lol) I'd be surprised if they were cracked since I only have 28,000 miles on this 2017 Convertible. It mostly sits in my carport in non-harsh weather in western WA. But I'll look tomorrow when it's light and see what I find. Still, would like to know what everyone's experience is with tires, especially interested in tires that don't wear out as easily from cornering. |

Sometimes age trumps mileage. 5-year old tires with cracks? Not unheard of, but not necessarily the norm, either. You're definitely right to check out the situation for yourself.

Michelin 4s non-runflat for the win. Better ride, quieter, maybe better handling. Good rain tire as well.

28k miles is high if these are original 2017 tires. Have you checked tread depth? These tires are dangerous in the wet when the tread starts to go.

You should probably go ahead and replace the tires if you find deep cracks in the rubber to be on the safe side!

My factory all season run flats wore past wear bars at 28k miles.I replaced with general g max summers. The cars drives so much better.I will not buy fun flats.

+1 for the Michelin P4s- not a run flat tire but a 300 wear rating and all around great summer tire. The 4 does not refer to this as a 4-season tire. I think they're also quieter than the OE tires (my OE run flats lasted 10K miles- so I don't think you're pushing yours too hard).
Infrequent use and UV exposure increase the rate of "dry rot" in tires. Look at the tires most often exposed to the sun in your carport. Lots more info here- https://www.wetrytires.com/tire-dry-rot/ |

+2 on the PS4’s … night and day difference. Won’t be going back to runflats after using them. Better to just have road side and a flat bed tow ready for that misfortunate event.

Can’t compare the runflats vs non runflats but I did replace the RFs on my 22 SS right after I got it with 15 miles on the Odometer. Replaced with the 4S and am very happy with them.

Run Flats serve a purpose
I was impressed when I ran over a 3" screw and had zero issue driving several miles to replace my run flat tire. However, when I replaced the runflats with regular tires, I learned just how poorly those runflats actually gripped the road, especially when it was a little wet. So, I suggest ditching the runflats at this point.

Thanks for all the replies. You guys have me sold on going with NON RunFlats. Especially since my Camaro is a convertible, I'd love to cut down on that road noise. I have roadside assistance on my Progressive Insurance, so I could always get towed on a flatbed if I had to.
I went out and looked at the tires, and sure enough, right around the bead where the tire meets the rim, all four are full of small cracks. Tread looks good, a little worn on the edges (as I would expect) but if it were not for the cracks, the tires would have a lot of miles left. Stopped by Discount Tire and the guy there said the same thing. Non-runflat are a lot cheaper too. I was looking at $400 each, these MICHELIN PILOT SPORT ALL SEASON 4 are only $243. Looks like they have good stop distance (113), (even in rain 130), tread dept of 10 with a tread grade of 540 and traction grade of AA. You guys have me sold on these tires. So glad I asked. The original high performance version isn't manufactured in the size you selected (245/50/18), guess if you wanted that, you'd need to upgrade to 19 or 20-inch wheels, which, based on your posts, is not something you'd want or need at this point. Those all-seasons you are going with aren't a slouch either, good luck with them and enjoy the ride
