Used Z questions

Hey hey.

With the used market crazy as it is, I was debating looking at moving my SS and looking into a used ZL1. Wanted to poll the community though and see if there’s anything I should be on the lookout for with regard to potential issues, and what is considered ‘decent’ pricing nowadays. Seeing them ranging mid 50’s for 30-50k miles and well over 70k for less-used specimens.

Figured I’d pick some brains before committing.

Me, I would order exactly what I wanted and avoid the high prices of used cars as well as the oil pump issue. Just the other day I checked Carmax and they placed a value on my 2020 of $65-68K. Am seriously considering selling it in a few weeks if prices stay this high

You just want to cash out or are you looking to replace it with something?

For me, the C8 Z06 is the only vehicle that stirs some excitement and it will probably take 2-3 years to get one at MSRP. The C8 Stingray is nice but would still take 9-12 months to get one and would just be settling since I couldn't get a Z06.

Ford GT500, markups too high. Dodge Hellcat, ok but not an upgrade, it would just be something different. The upcoming Nissan Z could be fun but that will take a while to get and will have a lot less power. The Supra is a BMW Z4 with a body kit, boring. New BRZ/GT86, will feel anemic coming from a ZL1 but relatively cheap. Mazda MX5s, lightweight fun cars you can wind out on the street but needs to be a toy only, very small size makes it tough to live with. For the price/performance, the ZL1 is hard to beat.

It almost seems like most people that buys these cars can hardly afford the payments and when they can make a quick buck they sell them.

Not sure i understand this logic, unless its to maybe buy a newer model or something else?

C8’s are out of my range and I’m not really a Vette guy or I’d be looking at C7 Grand Sports. Not a Mustang or Dodge fan either. The only import I debated was a Supra but again, it’s just not me. Really just want to jump to a ZL1. I could start throwing upgrades at the SS but, once you get rolling with that, you’re into ZL1 cash anyway.

Is this just a general market statement? I’m not sure what this implies.

I hear you. There is not a whole lot of fun cars to choose from anymore, which is why I recently purchased a ZL1 before they stop making V8 sports coupes for good. I already went down the EV route and still have a Model 3 as a daily driver. They are quick but once you get used to the quick 0-60mph times there is not much left to offer from a driving perspective. Hopefully GM has something up their sleeve.

I agree with the advice above - order a new ZL1, even at MSRP it's still a good deal for the performance, and esp. compared to a used one at or above MSRP. Then you can get the color and options you want.

Yes, by the time you mod an SS to run with a ZL1 in a straight line and/or around turns, you've spent quite a bit of money, but still have only the value of an SS. Plus with a ZL1 you have the "top dog" and the better (to most) and more aggressive styling.

Also, I have no technical proof to back this next claim up except numerous people on this forum having owned older 6th gen ZL1s or SSs with the BOSE stereo, and them having recently upgraded to a '21 ZL1, but the '21 models appear to have a better BOSE stereo than past models.

I think on early builds there were also some oil pump issues based on what I've seen only on this forum, I have no experience or additional insight on that issue.

Can only speak for myself as my ZL1 is paid for. It’s a great car but I have a Blackwing 5 on order. Just trying to time the selling market right for a good price.

I guess I got real lucky when I bought my used 2017 2 years ago. It had 422 miles and was priced right with the options I was looking for in a ZL1. So far no oil pump issue at over 21,000 miles and keeping my fingers crossed that it stays together! No regrets upgrading from a 2016 2SS and love to hear that whine. If you can find a low mileage used 2019 and later reasonably priced I would get it. Keep looking and something might work out for you.

I was thinking of ordering one, but bought a used one from a dealer a few weeks ago. It’s a blue, a10, 2018, with 9400 miles. All the options and the color I wanted. Paid $62k. I’m coming from a 2008 Z06.

Wasn't meant for you. Was meant for SnowWolfe who mentioned he was thinking about selling his 20 ZL1.

Was just curious why, like even if i could get 20k more then i paid I still wouldn't sell mine. I was just curious if it was a money thing, or to sell and buy something else new.

I don't disagree that some people can't afford their payments, but I can completely understand selling the fun car right now, especially before winter, and getting more than I paid for it. I have considered it. I trade cars around a lot, I like to drive new things and different things and I know many people here do also. Either way, the Z is an awesome car.
