Engine blew up
My friend and I have both a Camaro 2012 SS L99.
Mine is a 45 th aniversary and his is a convertible. We both made the same changes to the engine. E-force supercharger, smaller pulley, bigger injectors, CAI, Kooks long tube headers, CAT, Lingenfelter GT9, DOD delete kit, LS3 conversion in fact...690 Hp on the dyno. Now thuesday I was cruising behind him in Germany when he floored the gas pedal. On some highways in Germany there is no speed limit so it's nice to go playing there After a few seconds there was a little smoke from the left exhaust when shifting. A little later I could no longer see a thing and oil was spreading on my windshield. His engine blew up Now the car is still in Germany on a trailer waiting for the insurance to get it back to Belgium. I made a little movie with my phone for so far it was possible to get under the car. http://youtu.be/eKYHiYLbGWA I think this engine is dead? |

I would start with the tune and see why it let the motor hurt itself...

What I forgot to mention is that his engine modifications are only two weeks old, except for the supercharger. The hole in the oil pan makes me worry. |

When you start doing these kind of mods and putting this much stress on engine parts things can break. Brand new NASCAR engines blow up from time to time with very few laps on them and they are designed for the abuse they are given. You'll need to tear her down and see what failed and go from there. While what happened to his is cause for concern with yours, it doesn't mean yours is doomed to fail. If I were you I would surely want to know what failed in his and try and determine if it was just a faulty part or have you created a situation where the strength of engine parts are mismatched and going to cause you problems with hard use.

You can see the hole in the bottom of the engine where it looks like a probably a connecting rod came apart and went thru the bottom of the engine.

What I don't understand with people adding power to the top half of the motor and not beefing up the bottom end to handle the additional stress

800 is holding up just fine in a few cars around here so I don't know what you're talking about. We even have a guy at 915 rwhp stock bottom end. You'll be surprised how much these engines can handle with sufficient fuel and a perfect conservative tune. Is it smart to build the engine for boost yes, but is 700 hp isn't a lot for these engines (no) though it's starting to push the limits.
