Engine blew up

My friend and I have both a Camaro 2012 SS L99.
Mine is a 45 th aniversary and his is a convertible.
We both made the same changes to the engine.
E-force supercharger, smaller pulley, bigger injectors, CAI, Kooks long tube headers, CAT, Lingenfelter GT9, DOD delete kit, LS3 conversion in fact...690 Hp on the dyno.
Now thuesday I was cruising behind him in Germany when he floored the gas pedal. On some highways in Germany there is no speed limit so it's nice to go playing there
After a few seconds there was a little smoke from the left exhaust when shifting. A little later I could no longer see a thing and oil was spreading on my windshield.
His engine blew up
Now the car is still in Germany on a trailer waiting for the insurance to get it back to Belgium.
I made a little movie with my phone for so far it was possible to get under the car.

I think this engine is dead?

I would start with the tune and see why it let the motor hurt itself...

The tune is the same as mine. Mine makes 692 Hp and I already did about 10.000 Km's with this conversion and the tune.
What I forgot to mention is that his engine modifications are only two weeks old, except for the supercharger.
The hole in the oil pan makes me worry.

Generic tune or dyno tune? Fuel?

When you start doing these kind of mods and putting this much stress on engine parts things can break. Brand new NASCAR engines blow up from time to time with very few laps on them and they are designed for the abuse they are given. You'll need to tear her down and see what failed and go from there. While what happened to his is cause for concern with yours, it doesn't mean yours is doomed to fail. If I were you I would surely want to know what failed in his and try and determine if it was just a faulty part or have you created a situation where the strength of engine parts are mismatched and going to cause you problems with hard use.

Dyno tune done by EDS motorsport who tunes Camaro's in the States.
Fuel is 98 octane.

Send a message via MSN to Scott@Bjorn3D
You can see the hole in the bottom of the engine where it looks like a probably a connecting rod came apart and went thru the bottom of the engine.

What I don't understand with people adding power to the top half of the motor and not beefing up the bottom end to handle the additional stress

exactly! Did you expect almost 700hp to hold up on a stock bottom end for long???

800 is holding up just fine in a few cars around here so I don't know what you're talking about. We even have a guy at 915 rwhp stock bottom end. You'll be surprised how much these engines can handle with sufficient fuel and a perfect conservative tune. Is it smart to build the engine for boost yes, but is 700 hp isn't a lot for these engines (no) though it's starting to push the limits.

When my son was 16 we had a 74 Camaro Father/Son project. Original plan was a mild 400hp 454 BBC until he wanted to go with a big cam so reminded him you are only as good as your weakest link and ended up replacing the following due to his cam change:
* Bigger int/ext valves
* Ported/polished heads
* Forged H-beam rods
* balance rotating assembly within .0 grams, even the 1/2 weights were within .0 grams
* Custom driveshaft/u-joints rated at 800+hp & drive shaft loop
* Upgraded 10 bolt rear to 30 spline HD axles, HD Mosler axles, disc brakes, 3" wheel studs
* Welded in subframe connectors
* Rebuilt the Turbo 400 tranny with HD parts & 3,500 stall
* Vacuum can to help with the power brakes

While we were at we also:
* Tubular front control arms
* Big front/rear sway bars
* Quick ratio steering box from Gen 3 WS6 Trans Am
* Dyno Mat on floors, trunk, door skins, firewall
* dual electric fans
* 3" steel cowl hood to clear 4" tall air fliter
* Big stereo with amps, subs

The 454 block we started with was a 4 bolt main with forged steel crank
