Spark plug wire heat sleves

What is the intended importance of these items, is the heat protection snake oil or truly beneficial?

Beneficial if you have headers. If not, it's just piece of mind and possibly dress up, if you get color matching ones. Headers stick out a bit further than the OEM cast manifolds so there's more of a chance for the wires to touch them.

I agree, for headers. I would not use them otherwise. I have a set on my Vette and on my El Camino, both have headers... but too, they also look real good (they're both show cars). Stock exhaust on my Camaro, so won't be adding them.

Or turbos. They (the stock manifolds) melted boots and even burnt through a DEI sleeve because of proximity

yep, happened to me once. The car ran like crap until I finally saw it was melting a wire. I brought some new taylor wires and heat sleves.

I'm not running them but some have issues where they are either touching or close to touching. In those cases, they come in handy.
