Something stupid popped in my head while trying to sleep last night

Ok, here's a stupid question to which I really don't have an answer...

If your battery dies, you can use the hidden key and the hidden lock to get inside. Ok, got it.

No lets say you're in your car. What do you do if your battery dies when you have the doors locked and the windows up? The door handle from the inside doesn't unlock/open the door... Can't call "blondestar" and ask them to let you out. Does a person need to crawl into the trunk via the back seat and get out via the trunk lid. Like an escape hatch?

Crap like this is why I don't sleep right anymore......

I think pulling the interior door handle will manually unlock your door...

The door handle will mechanically unlock the driver side door.

But, even if let's say it didn't, ask yourself how likely this scenario is. You are sitting in the car with the doors locked, meaning you must have just stopped driving (otherwise at least the driver door would still be open), yet your battery dies so badly that it isn't able to give even a single pulse to open the door.

I think a giant sequoia falling on your car while driving in downtown San Diego on a sunny day is more likely than this.

If you notice, when the doors are locked, pull it once, nothing - twice - door opens.

Scary yes. EVs more scarier as the electronics dominate

<--- electrical degree

Good thing gm never made a car with electronic only door locks without initially having a manual lever to open the door that resulted in the death of someone, that would never happen

Speaking of pulling the handle twice, when did they
Go to that. Its a BMW thing. My 18 SS didnt have it.
I was locked in a 06 GTO. Handles did not work and the
Door plungers broke. Dont recall how i got out. Owned 2 of them
Both australian junk. Only thing decent was the LS engine.
When i couldnt buy a radiator hose any more, i sold them
And bought a 1SS. Way better car.

Pull the back seat down, go thru the trunk and release the trunk handle.

So to build on what Arpad said, either
  • You just got in the car to drive it, in which case your door was unlocked so you could get in, or
  • You just finished driving, in which case your car would have unlocked when you shifted into park or when you shut it off per the manual as noted in this thread https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...=575311&page=2

Automatic Door Locks

When the doors are closed, the ignition is on, and the shift lever is moved out of P (Park) for automatic transmissions, or if the vehicle speed is above 13km/h (8 mph) for manual transmissions, the doors will lock.

<directions to unlock doors>

Automatic door locking cannot be disabled. Automatic door unlocking can be enabled through vehicle personalization. See Vehicle Personalization - 124.

On Page 124 (127, actually, as 124 is the start of the section):

Auto Door Unlock

This allows selection of which of the doors will automatically unlock when the vehicle is shifted into P (Park) with an automatic transmission or when the vehicle is turned off with a manual transmission

Select Off, All Doors, or Driver Door.

So, make sure your Auto Door Unlock is not set to 'Off' and you really shouldn't get in this situation unless you yourself lock the doors.

Not if it's a convertible.
