Shitty Paint. Chipped so easily!

Hi,

While trying to get the streaks in the inside window. The open driver door was open and my foot opened the door a bit and slightly tapped chrome door handle on my 1985 Riviera. The door was opened to an inch or so by handle and door opened a bit more & Camaro top coat chipped off.

I have read how thin the paint is on Camaro5 and Camaro6, but this takes the cake!

Fortunately the white base under Hyper Blue didn't chip.

I immediately went to dealer for touch up and asked for edge guard like I had on my 2013. Dealer said no such animal.

While sun was setting I applied the 1st coat by taping off around the chip & got 98%. The bottom piece of tape was too high so sliver of white shows. No worries the next two coats will take care of that.

Here's a pic of chip.

Sorry to see that. I need some door edge guards too. I have seen them - perhaps someone is making them.

Paint chips suck - we are in an urban area (SF Bay Area) and frankly daily driving and such simply lead to the eventual chipping and scratching. I don't really get up in a heap about it. Part of life. Still - never fun to have happen.

How did you apply the touch-up? With an air-brush?

To be fair you will never get good milage on an edge like that. You could apply 12 mils to that panel and you would end up with only a few on the edge. The paint is thin on these cars, but that isn't actually a great example of it.

I had a similar thing happen to me and bought some touch up paint:

Worked like a charm. It even comes with the clear coat.

It isn't the camaro paint, it is all manufacturers paint these days that are thinner and more prone to chipping...

It's not big government, it called maximizing profits from a bean counter's perspective.

Do you seriously think that if there was no government regulation, the auto manufacturers would be giving us nice good thick paint? Good paint costs money and that eats into their profit margin. Big government has nothing to do with it.

No regulations? Probably no paint. We'd have to paint it ourselves. They'd just hand us a voucher at the dealership.

Government had a lot to do with paint sucking these days too. They forced paint manufacturers to remove what once made paint durable in the name of the environment.

Bean counters make everything suck not just paint.
