A wee bit of brake fade:

I posted this on the Facebook group, and got some solid answers, but figured I'd throw it up on here, too. Can never get too many opinions.

So, I was at the FIRM in N Florida, 1.5 mile short track, lot of braking zones from about 60-100.

I swapped about 5 months ago to Motul 600 and stainless lines. Stock pads and rotors.

After about ten laps, I was experiencing a little bit of a mushy pedal, just about a 40% loss in feel. Nothing that was fear inducing, but a definite difference.

Consensus seems to be the pads, so that's where I am leaning toward replacing.

Any advice would be helpful.

Was this the 1st track event in the 5 months that fluid was in the reservoir?

+1

you should replace the fluid before a track day.

A while back I had a similar issue - the cause was I was using the brakes too much.

Two track days on that fluid.

I drive the car maybe 2500 miles a year now, so figure there was about 1000 miles between then and Friday, but no real spririted driving.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic; meaning it will absorb water, usually from any surrounding air into the solution.

It may seem like it - but your brake system is not a sealed off from all points.
it doesnt matter how many miles you put on it, or how long it was in the car.

what matters is how long its been since the seal on the bottle was broken.

That makes perfect sense.

Change the fluid, you will be fine. I track mine at Sebring and get a little softer pedal after a full very hot day. Stock pads work really well.

I'll definitely change the fluid. If I still experience similar fade, then I know it's the pads.

If you run it hard I'd recommend a higher heat rated pad. I push my car hard at the track and I bought some mid-tier Gloc's and my pedal felt a lot better after getting the car nice and hot.

Our Stock pads are very very good though.

I recommend Motul 660 instead of the 600. The 600 didn't cut it for me going into turn 17 at sebring one day. I'll never run 600 again. I know it runs fine for others at 600, but 660 isn't hurting anything.

SRF is the best and you would probably only need to flush once a year depending on how many events you do. I know not everyone will agree with that but SRF is in another tier compared to Motul. You pay for that tier too!
