Unhappy Lost one of the few remaining B-17's today

For those of you who enjoy WWII aircraft as much as cars, a sad day is upon us: The Liberty Belle went down North of Chicago and is a complete loss.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt.

Just sad to lose one of the few airworthy examples of a great plane.

I got to fly in one of those a few years ago. The group flew around the country and was a non profit organization. It was an experience I'll never forget

Sad loss to the aviation community. A lot of effort and $$ goes into getting those airworthy again and maintaining them in that condition.

Every time I see a B-17 it just grabs me...just such an elegant aircraft. To lose ANY of them just breaks my heart.

To the members of the Liberty Foundation that owned/flew/maintained/loved that piece of history - we thank you for your efforts and mourn your loss...again, happy that no lives were lost in the crash - she brought everyone home, just like all of those broken birds that limped home during the war.

This. Right now I'm joined up with a group getting a nonprofit off the ground to save a C-53 that flew over North Africa, Italy, Normandy, and the Ardene. Basically followed the whole war until she was surplus'd in '46 and converted to a DC3.

Even after all these years, all it took was some oiling of the the 2800 and it fired right up.

Unfortunately, these old radials are notorious for engine fires, and it looks like a compound list of problems that routinely fubar'd these on landing in England struck many years later.. sad, but they were built like flying dixie cups. For every one lost, they had 10 to replace 'em.

Just.. well that was 1943. In 2011.. they're flying holy grails.

When I saw the pic from the top turret looking back at the tail, I immediately imagined a squadron of ME-109's swooping in for a strafe...man that must have been scary as hell.

Think that's bad, look up Sonderkommando Elbe. German 'Kamikaze' pilots that bailed before they rammed old Dora era 109s into bomber boxes.

Probably one of the best stories I've seen animated on History's Dogfights.
