Rattle under the Car on smooth Blacktop
Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted here.
So I have this 17 RS that bought new with just over 18K miles. Recently I have noticed this rattle from under the car. I feel it through the gas pedal and on the floor. It comes and goes with no apparent reason. Not during acceleration. Steering wheel is steady and is not affected by braking. It's like up-down high frequency rattle. You feel it more than you can hear anything. Any idea what could cause this? |

if you feel it more than hear it, it is unlikely it's metal on metal ...there is a lot of plastic and insulation covered plastic panels under the car that can have fasteners become loose over time.
I suggest spending some time under the car and checking all the bolts for tightness that you can reach from front to back on the underbody panels. starting there would be the first step. |

Thanks for the input, I will check under the car. But the way it feels its more powerful than plastic rattle, but it's possible.

I did a search. Looks like it's the torque converter.
People have described exact same issue. |

If that's not it, you might check the drive shaft. My brother-in-law had a vibration in his and they had to replace it. Took two dealers to find it. Kind of a harmonic at specific RPMs.

Dealer changed TM fluid. So far so good, but only about 30 miles driven. The tech knew about the issue from previous customers.

I recently had an issue with my 2LT RS sounds somewhat similar, maybe(?)
When I would drive, I would get a metallic rattling. Sounded somewhat exhaust related, but it was quiet, not consistent, sometimes hard to replicate. In the space of 3 days, it ended up being an extremely loud, embarrassing, metallic whine. Took it to the dealership and they diagnosed it as the butterfly spring inside the exhaust that actuates the AFM butterfly when switching between V6 and 4cyl mode. It had broken, causing it to rattle around as the exhaust gases were flowing over it, but it was still attached on one end, so it would change position and change sound. The dealership ended up replacing the complete exhaust system from the headers back. Sounds great again now, no issues, and now have a complete new exhaust and cats as well. Maybe that gives you an avenue to check out? Good luck. I know how annoying it is!
