New service bulletin-2020 GM V8 motor valve spring issues.

https://gmauthority.com/blog/2020/09...gm-v8-engines/

The service bulletin indicates that vehicles equipped with certain GM V8 engines may produce a service engine light along with a misfire and strange engine noise. The issues can be linked back to faulty valve springs, with the bulletin instructing the service department to check for a broken valve spring and, if necessary, perform a cylinder leakage test on the cylinder with the broken spring. The bulletin also says that “if no cylinder leakage is observed it will be necessary to replace all valve springs on both banks if the vehicle is built between June 1, 2020 to September 15, 2020.”

The bulletin also indicates that the above fix only applies to the following 6.2L GM V8 engines: L87, LT1, LT2 and LT4. For all other current GM V8 engine RPOs (L82, L84 and L8T), the service department is instructed to “just replace the affected valve spring,” and that if they determine there is a cylinder leakage, it “will be necessary to inspect further to determine the extent of the engine damage to determine correct repair required.” GM is also requesting that the service department send back valve springs from affected engines for further inspection.

So I am assuming it's a bad batch, then?

At least it's not as bad as the Subaru and Mazda diesel valve spring recalls, which are more of a design issue than a supplier issue.

Reminds me of my 2010 2SS with the LS3 and the broken valve spring I had replaced under warranty in 2012! Come on GM, stop putting inferior parts in the engines now!

Orangeman, I would contact your dealer and talk to the Service advisor or Service Manager and ask them about this news and they will advise you. Don’t panic!

The real question is HOW did the batch become faulty? They're the same springs that have been on every LT1 in both Camaro and Corvette since C7 LT1 production started for the 2014 model year. What did the factory do differently in the production process?

Yeah I agree with that Petrol Head. Could be that GM used a different part manufacturer which was cheaper than before or other factors causing the problems. My ZL1 LT4 maybe a ticking timebomb waiting to go off due to some LT4s having defective oil pumps and for that reason mine will stay stock until the drivetrain warranty is up.

My car was built in July. I’m going to call the dealer today and see what they have to say. I’ll report back.

The new C8 seems to be having a big problem with this. More than a few cars over on the Corvette Forum reporting issues with cracked valve springs.

Also, it seems if this problem develops, it happens early like within the first hundred or so miles of ownership. So, I think if you already have a thousand or more miles, you're probably safe from having the cracked valve spring issue.

Mine was also built in July. Let me know what they say. Obviously I have any engine issues/codes/faults I will stop driving and make the dealer aware, but if there is something we can do proactively would be good to know.

I am just under 500 miles, many of the C8's I have seen with the valve spring issues seemed to have issues under 100 miles, but who knows.
