Custom Bottom Steering Wheel Plate Finished!

It was too hard for me to find a match for thegl gray Alcantara Suede, so I went with the accented red to cover the plate. I ordered a replacement plate from my Chevy Dealership too.

The plate just prys off the steering wheel with a trim tool. I used a dremel and flexible sanding disk to sand down the plastic rivet heads on the backside(just flush), and then pushed the insert out. I then sanded down some of the back so that the insert pins would protrude a little and give the JB Weld plastic bonder something to grab onto.

I roughed up the back so that the adhesive spray would stick, and then sanded the front as well. I coated the piece and edges with the 3M Spray and began working the material.

After it was trimmed up I poked holes in the material where the insert pins would go. The excess material at the holes helped to snap the insert back into place.

I mixed up the plastic bonder, smeard it across the area, and then using the wooden stick I spanned the plate and clamped the insert in place while the plastic bonder cured.

Im very happy with how this turned out. It looks way better in person, due to the red having just a slight dirty look, which helps it blend better with the gray Alcantara.

Great work and thanks for the details and photos! Looks like a fun weekend project. Questions: where did you get the alcantera and does it match the stitching?

It's not Alcantara. I found it at JoAnn Fabrics here in Toledo, OH. it's very inexpensive, and is pretty close to the stitching color. The fact that it's on 2 different surfaces, makes it very hard to notice any slight difference in the color. It's also a thinner suede, so it's a little easier to work with. I completed this in about 1 hr.
