Not sure what you thought you read but Katech DID confirm the newer pumps were more durable, I believe he said he's only seen 1 or 2 newer failures.

Mileage at failure No. 1 -- 22,120 - 2nd pump barely lasted 7,000 miles.

Last time around bunch of bearing, bolts, tensioners were replaced. Bottom end was cracked open to inspect for bearing damage - none was found.

CEL came ON from "reduced engine power" message on DIC, oil pressure looked fine at the time, but as engine RPM dropped coming off highway, it started to behave erratically ( as shown). As I pulled into dealer and clutched in - low oil pressure showed and i turned it off!

When DIC message came on, oil pressure was about 40psi, oil temp about 200*F - by all looks, normal. Radio off, no abnormal noises.

Getting fed up w this pattern of failure.
While I still think it’s a relatively low failure rate with all the cars that doesn’t matter when you’re the one with the issue. A second pump failure is absolutely ridiculous and makes me wonder if it’s not just the pump that is causing the issue. You said you have no track events with this car and this is the second failure and this pump is the updated version. Anything mechanical will fail at some point but not normal to happen twice with your miles and use .

That's what I understood: more durable but they managed to break them.

I had the exact same thought, but I wish I had the mechanical skills and knowledge to explain what would be the cause of the failure.

Every part will break when stressed enough.

I totally agree and I hope that our (newest) pumps are more durable. However in Katech's test their pump didn't break under the same conditions used for the OEM one.

An oil pump should never fail within 250,000 miles, period, regardless of use, oil viscosity, etc. Especially in a very expensive engine like the LT4, it's ridiculous...this plus excessive (imo) oil blowby and worn valve guide issues has caused my faith in GM engine building to take a hit

Let's see how the new Z06 holds up over time

Sure enough. Just picked it up from having a Katech put in. 22k on this but it’s been showing on the lower side of the scale since I got it with 14k on it.

I think it would be interesting if Katech would tell us in terms of power of their part is 2x or 3x or maybe 1.5x stronger than the updated OEM. Idk if it’s that’s simple, but I’d be curious to know just HOW MUCH stronger the katech is over the revised oil pump from GM. Maybe see all 3 pumps compared on a scale as supposedly the revision is confirmed to be stronger

The Katech pump is strong enough that Katech is staking their reputation by building and selling it. No worries there. It's not going to break.

I think the hair-splitting on this oil pump issue is because putting in a Katech pump costs a bunch of money, and is not an upgrade in the usual sense.

My advice for anyone who owns a 2017 and 2018 ZL-1, and is worried about the oil pump breaking: no amount of hoping, or watching the oil pressure gauge, will put an end to the worry. Only changing the pump will fix it.

My 2018 slowly entered the build-date danger zone, so I bought a Katech pump and had it replaced.

It cost $3,200 all in, done at the dealership by their best mechanic. On a car that cost me $64K, to which I have added $15K in PPF, BMR suspension, etc. It was worth it. Now, no more worry.

I’ll let the dealer handle that one, I have until 2028

If I get into the engine before 2028, a katech will go in. Works for me!

Confirmed - oil pump failed. I used to joke that owning an Audi out of warranty would be expensive - GM is making me eat my words recently. And yet that ct-5 BW is calling my name! HELP.

Original pump failed at 22,000 miles Aug 2020 - i got car back in October.

Replacement oil pump failed Jan 2023 at 29,000 miles, oil life approx 32% per DIC. I had filter and oil sitting on shelf to change it soon.
