I'm not saying it doesn't provide "max protection" while tracking, although I'd love to hear actual proof that 5/30 doesn't. I'm saying the engine sounded different and it definitely didn't rev the same as it did while running 5/30. I noticed it both times I've switched.

I will make a statement based on my automotive tech background of many decades, over a million miles of automobile road time, and years of drag racing, there is no way there would any noticeable engine operational changes by switching from a 5-30 oil to a 0-40 oil or 0-40 to 5-30. The only visible differences would possibly be oil pressure and oil temps.

Could the thinner oil be getting in the cylinders effecting combustion?

No. the difference between 5-30 and 0-40 will not affect oil getting by the rings.

Man, people overthink oil so much.

LOL instead of looking at xw-30 vs xw-40 look at HTHS, which is a rating mimicking sustained high speed driving. HTHS >= 3.5 and you're good with the LT1. ACEA A3 is another way to find it in the ratings, which requires this threshold. xw-30 and 40s grades meet this standard, usually the "Euro" versions. Secondly low volatility is good for direct injection (less oil mist in the engine). Those are the Mobil ESP types.
