Not factoring in ownerships costs and resale value would be a BIG mistake. You’ll spend thousands more keeping an 800rwhp LT1 up and running properly as opposed to $0 for a stock ZL1 in warranty. And what will that ragged out SS be worth vs a stock ZL1 when time to sell?

Two cars, same up front cost. But one will cost thousands more to own and be worth thousands less at resale. Faster in a straight line but inferior in every other way. No brainer.

Not modifying the 1LE and no where in the post did I mention I was modding my ride. This post was intended to discuss what would you add to 1SS within the price budget. Instead I get ZL1 owners defending their ego’s and putting their hand on the bible and saying that no SS could ever compete with the ZL1. I grew up modding in the 1970’s and I do notice it’s the older gentleman that mode more but some young guys have the bug. Instead the young people want the instant power from the factory and don’t want to mode. The manufacturers have made it harder to mode but there is still an industry that supports an aftermarket demand. Some say after market sometimes are inferior to factory but go see what the race builders are using, it’s not always OEM.

Rant over and Greg this was not aimed at you. I enjoy your posts.

You’re comparing two cars you think cost the same, excuse me for pointing out one is going to cost you an extra $10k or more to own. Spend yourself broke for all I care.

And again this post is a discussion not reality.

You still have not read the whole post.

ZL1, never a good return on mods. Keep it simple.

If it was strictly a drag setup, I'd go 1SS with twin turbo plus supporting mods.

ZL1 is the better car, but set up with handling in mind, not really drag strip.

That's what I was thinking too, I mean we know that will be the case.

The ZL1 will just be a better platform to start with. Will save money on supporting pieces. If 780 whp is the goal, the ZL1 will take a lot less to get there, and do it more reliably.

The only real drawback is the initial investment of the ZL1 might mean having to struggle through with a mere 650 at the crank for a little while.

Personally I'd mod the SS, 20k in mods spent on a Whipple, cam, meth and E85, full exhaust, forged internals and upgraded fueling will trounce any ZL1 on the street, strip or track. Get all these parts during black friday and youll probably be able to save up to 2k as well. It all depends how far you wanna go really, and how much you care about warranty. If I had a ZL1, I probably would want at least full exhaust and E85.

ZL1 all day for me but I’m not into drag racing. I wouldn’t feel comfortable daily driving a 1SS modded with high horsepower for my 60plus mile commute in total comfort I do in my ZL1 with heated/vented seats and ride select that a 1SS won’t nearly match. Nor spending a day doing numerous 20min high rpm/high speed runs on a road course with turns. Or a nationwide road trip I will do someday in my ZL1. Not saying that a modded SS couldn’t but over time I see a reliability concern. Others may opt for the 1SS and that’s fine. A 2SS with the additional features would fill some of the void left from a 1SS but comes at additional cost. Nothing against SS’s and love the 1LE’s but no amount of $’s will make them equal or better to the ZL1 in my eyes. It’s your car and $’s, do what you want with it.
