ZL1 is answer, unless...

1. You don't care about warranty
2. You can get more performance than a ZL1 for money spent
3. You love spending endless hours working on the car and/or trust your shop/tuner

The awesome eLSD differential is something you're never going to have on an SS
I would have bought a ZL1 but I daily drive my SS, felt wasteful to consume the car that way.

Your other choice is a used SS and mod it.......

If you're going to mod the car anyway, pick the SS.
The ZL1 looses any advantage once modifying begins.

You can build it to perform as good as any moded ZL1, especially when the LT4 itself requires internals to get to those crazy numbers.
If anything, rebuilding the LT1 entirely will automatically net you a more bullet proof engine as a base for mods.

You can get better suspension, brakes, cooling, etc in the aftermarket anyway.

Anything that's considered better or nicer can be replaced into the SS.
Once you choose to mod any car, you loose the only thing that technically matters, warranty.
Then again, GM is always trying to wiggle out of their warranty.

Basically the above reply/quote is what I feel and think. The Point of the post is to talk about what would you do with the extra cash to make a better car that suits the car’s individual drivers needs. Track or Drag, I prefer drag strip. Of course the ZL1 owners will be bias and I don’t blame them. The post is more geared for someone thinking should I get an SS and mod it or go the safe route and buy the ZL1. Also the post was intended to mode the SS to the point of reaching the cost of a bare bones ZL1 and not debate or include adding mods to the ZL1. Its a discussion to help potential buyers.

If a person wants to build a Camaro for drag strip racing and street driving then probably the LT1 would be the better choice over a ZL1 or SS. It weighs less than an SS but still has the engine/transmission that the SS has and would be cheaper to buy and would have more money for the mods/engine upgrades!

Not sure about that, I thought about that too. But it doesn’t have the track mode option and that makes me wonder is it an easy fix or what. I would rather mode a SS then a LT1.

Depends...the answer isn't as clear cut as some make it out to be.

A used low mileage ZL1 for 45-50k if you want more power and don't want to mod or just do light mods is a good choice.

If it was a drag car only it doesn't really matter either way you go. ZL1 isn't faster then a modded SS at the strip. 8l90 actually 60fts better then the 10l90 and the fastest built 6th gens in the 1/4 mile are SS cars.

If it's going to be a one for all road course/strip/street car then ZL1 being the better handling and elsd is worth having. Also all around a better looking car.

Either way the depreciation is about the same on all models which is why I would never buy new for either model. Pay 63k for a new ZL1 and it's worth 50k in a year and 5-10k miles later. Pay 40k for a 1SS new and it will be worth 30k a year and 5-10k miles later. Either model will never depreciate more then 50% of its retail over time if the mileage is kept low.

That being said if I was starting over, I would likely opt for a low mileage used ZL1.

That’s what I did last March and bought a used 2017 ZL1 and saved about $14,000 over the sticker price when it was new!

Hey Blackbeast, you have too nice of a SS 1LE to do major mods to! I would leave it alone!
