Request: how to drain and change rear differential fluid

Title says it all. Anyone have directions for this either with or without pictures?

Not sure about the 6th gen. But very easy to do on the 5th gen. Done mine 3 times. Helped a friend over the weekend doing his.

Key is to open the fill plug first, to make sure you can fill the rear after you drain it.

On the 5th gen, there are two bolts. One fill, one drain.

Good luck.

Why are you changing it. I had mine changed at my dealer because it was making noise and there is a bulletin about the fluid that was put in at the factory. Check with your dealer to see if yours falls into the VIN category to have it changed at no charge.

I tried. I am having the noise, but the dealer said 'We could not replicate the problem, so we won't do anything'

From what I was told by the service department, they say it's not really a service bulletin, but more of just a guide to solving the problem if it's there....

Like David said it is very easy. I did it at 1k miles just for reassurance. If you search the forum some one posted some pictures of the rear diff. There is two plugs. Top is for filling and bottom is for draining. Make sure you get the engines running temperature up first. Not sure on the automatics but for my manual it shows operating transmission temp. I drove home from my office about 30 minutes to make sure the cooler heated the rear diff fluid. When I got home I put my ramps behind the back tires and had my wife watch to see when the car was level. The end of my driveway slopes down to the road. Open the top plug first and then open the bottom plug. This makes sure you can get fluid back in just in case and lets the fluid drain fast. I use some oil drain plug sealant just a little on the plugs. I think it takes just over a qt buy two quarts. I used about half the qt to flush the old out. Then put the bottom plug in and waited until it started to come out of the top plug and put it back in. If you need pictures I could probably do this over the weekend. Although I do not think there is much else to go over.

So to get this right, you heat up the oil, drain then with drain plug open fill to let some residual drain out? Then plug and keep filling till it starts to drain out of the fill hole?

That’s the gist of it. There are a few videos on YouTube that show this process

Anyone have the correct GM torque specs for the diff drain and fill plug? I think i've read that it is 20 or 22 foot pounds.
