Bring a bright light with you, you can see it thru the bottom grill also. I have the front bumper reinforcement off on my car to remove front end weight, so the cooler is very visible looking down thru the hood latch opening, may be hidden with the reinforcement and absorber material in place.

When I looked at the local one here in town, I saw holes. At the time I did t think the LT1 came with the cooler so I assumed it was just a plastic piece with holes in it. Figured it was just the location where it would be mounted for the SS. Oh, and BTW how much does the front crash bar weigh? I had the front and rear off my 01 SS and replaced with mid west chassis lightweight bumper supports. |

This car uses a good amount of aluminum and is an impressive chassis IMO. There are other things you can do to save weight…are a number of “weight loss” threads on the forum.

Interestingly, my window sticker makes no mention of a transmission cooler, while the engine oil cooler is listed. Nevertheless, this is just an excerpt of options, the complete build sheet should be authoritative (or so I thought), and that one does list the trans cooler.

I have an LT1 and I can see the engine oil cooler on the side. What is the "extra" oil cooler the SS has for the engine?
As far as I know they run coolant lines to the oil heat exchanger next to the oil filter. Unless the heat exchanger is different in LT1 and SS (bigger), what is the extra cooler? Regarding the trans cooler, based on what you guys said, It might be a marketing stun to push people to buy the SS. It doesn't make any sense engineering-wise to undercool a vehicle to upsell you the next tim. Might be true in the manual transmission, since most manuals don't have transmission oil cooler. I Also think since the LT1 is limited to 155mph, you can only apply the 455hp to the drivetrain for a limited amount of time, then the ECU will cut power and maintain 155mph. This will stop extreme heat generation in the transmission, differential and engine. Even at a track day. Makes total sense to remove the Diff cooler in this scenario. If you don't have limiter and reach Vmax for extented periods, then dissipating the heat generated by losses/friction would be key to avoid oil overheating. |

My lt1 10spd has the trans cooler. I couldn’t imagine any of them not having it

You're right, here is the official TSB as confirmation.
