Anyone here have GPS issues on track?
I am trying to pin this down and I'm really confused. I've ran the following setups.
1. Trackaddict w/phone GPS 2. Trackaddict w/QStarz GPS unit 3. Garmin Catalyst 4. (Current setup) Solo2DL And I've had GPS issues with all of them. They will work fine then it will lose GPS and won't capture the lap at start/finish. I am beginning to think there is something in the car that is interfering with the GPS signal, but I can't find anything else about it online. Was hoping someone here may have had a similar issue and found a resolution. I am going to try again this friday at VIR with the Solo2DL after working with their support and having them reset the unit and update to a new firmware version. Here is what my GPS data looks like, sometimes it's even worse. You can also see it in this video at around 30 seconds, it just drops out. |

Where is the GPS antenna? I've had issues in a few cars when the antenna has been inside the car. Usually resolves when moving the antenna to the exterior.

The GPS antenna is in the solo2 unit at the back/top. I am going to try placing it in a different place, but I don't think placement is the issue, I feel like onstar or some other feature in the car is interfering with the GPS frequency.

My catalyst is mounted a bit lower than it should be, occasionally is slow getting the satellites but once they're picked up it stays. Definitely not the issues you're having though.

Something I have often wondered after seeing my gps unit struggle to get GPS at the start was the ceramic window tinting on my car. I let it sit for more than 55 minutes at one point inside the car and it could not get signal and then put it on top of car and almost immediately the gps light came on. Not conclusive but very curious. Once it gets signal I move it back onto the dash and it seems to be fine.

I get the same results with my GPS device and RaceChrono. My lines look off track while cooking a nice lap. Frustrating, for reference: my GPS transponder is zip tied to the defrost vents.

After repositioning my solo2 and updating it I had no issues at VIR. Guy from aim also told me I could try using a GPS repeater outside the car. Says it should help pick up more satellites.
Could maybe be a solution for someone: https://webstore.tri-m.com/gps-rf-eq...ater-for-cars/ |

I had the GPS receiver for my Race Capture in the back window and never had a problem.

No issues, I've ran the PDR, timing apps on my phone with external GPS, AIM and now Catalyst

I’ve had issues with track addict on my phone, but the Catalyst has always been spot on for me on all the tracks I’ve done in US and in Europe. I mount my catalyst on the upper right corner of the windshield.
Like others mentioned, it does sometimes take a few minutes to acquire the signal, but once it does it has been rock solid. |

The GPS refresh frequency is a factor too right? The iPhone is 1hz or once per sec. Not sure how fast the others get a fix, but at high speeds you need high frequency for enough resolution accuracy. 1 second is a long way on the track.
Edit: I looked at the Qstarz and it has 10hz (10 times a second) update. That's pretty good. Next your cpu needs to be able to keep up along with the memory IO. If you are using an iPhone I would close all apps for sure except Trackaddict. Some continue to run in the background. If the antenna reception is otherwise working when sitting I would check this.
