I've driven a little over 1/2million kilometers in my lifetime and I've seen it ONCE. The look the guy gave back was "if I turn it off it won't restart"

Maybe it's more of a be on the safe side Canadian habit.

Left field. Yeah, and you might break your leg getting out of bed, so forget everything and juggle hand grenades with the pins out.

I've been filling up while idling for years. Never been an issue.

You fill the 69' mustang while running?? And here I figured those "turn engine off" signs at the gas stations were a remnant of the 1950s-70s and carbureted engines......guess not. If Zeke is filling the 69' running I am filling the 16' running. Still waiting on a coherent argument about engine damage from this practice.......not my car getting stolen, blowing up myself and others, or any other concerns some of you have, that myself and other sane people don't have.

Hahaha... well, I don't leave my '69 running. I would, but it has no heater or AC. So no big benefit. And I'm having to be crouched over holding the gas pump, very vulnerable position where someone can jump in and go before I could react.

But all my other cars I drive, I've never had an issue filling while idling. And that's filling up about once every other day.

Today I learned:

- Americans refuel their cars an average of 17 billion times per year; that's 68 billion refuels over a 4-year span
- From 2004-2008, there were 5020 fires at service stations, 48 injuries from fires, and 2 deaths from fires
- 61% of those above figures were as a result of vehicle fires

So, the following figures are how many of each occurred as a result of a vehicle fire over 4 years:
Deaths - 1.22
Injuries - 29.28
Any fire - 3062.2

Because I am unable to find ANY facts on how many vehicle fires are caused by engines running versus static, smoking, or other cause, let's assume that EVERY SINGLE FIRE IS CAUSED BY A RUNNING ENGINE (stupid thing to assume, since we know that static and smoking are far-and-away the leading cause; but, there are no figures available, so let's run with this). Given this assumption, the following percentages are the likelihood of something happening if you leave your engine running:

Any fire: 0.000004570%
Injury: 0.000000044%
Death: 0.000000002%

So, there is a 4-in-100,000,000 (four in one hundred million) chance that me leaving my engine running is going to cause a fire that hurts someone (myself included).

I just scrolled through 7 pages of BS and not one answer if it can trigger a CEL in this car.

I'll give it a try....

My understanding is that yes, indeed, a loose or missing gas cap will trigger a CEL....

However, it is not instantaneously triggered....If it were left off for a long period of time, it will eventually trigger a cel....In fact, my owner's manual describes the most common cause of a cel is the gas cap.

The catch is it takes a "while" to activate a cell, and even after corrected, the car takes it's time to "learn" that it has been correctly closed before it will turn the cel off....

I would say that gassing up with the engine running is just not long enough for the car to justify turning on the cel for a loose gas cap...

Hope this is helpful....Good luck.

Thanks! That was my exact understanding as well and I'm glad you confirmed for me

I gave up reading all of the comments but the car locks itself when you get out and walk away with the fob.

I've left mine running multiple times and run into the convenience store for a drink or while refueling.

But the car doesn't come with a gas cap.........
