.

Looking for guys in the know. I have an opportunity to purchase a barn find that is about 2hrs from my home. The guy is claiming that it's an x33 with the original drivetrain. If this is true the price is very good. The car has no Z/28 bages from the picture he has posted and it doesn't have the cowl hood. Just the base hood. What should i be looking for to make sure it's the real deal?
Thanks in advance.

Here some pictures for you. Look at the rear bumper guards, the Z/28's were much bigger and were the only Camaro's to have them that size. My car had the optional front bumper guards also. The cowl induction was an option. Make sure the car has a 12 bolt rear end with multi leaf springs. The car came with 373 gears, mine had optional 410's. The engine will have double hump heads. Also check out the tack, mine had a 8000 RPM one. Up until April of 1969, spoilers were an option. Spoilers were added to my car in 1970. Notice the stripe that goes below the spoiler, if that was factory, the trunk lid would not have a stripe on it. The rear emblem would be relocated on the trunk. If you open the trunk, look for the stickers referring to the rear differential. Just a few suggestions. See if they have the Protect-O-Plate also. Good luck!

Wow! Thank you very much. I didn't expect such a thorough reply. That helps a lot. I never saw a Z/28 without the cowl hood. I took it for granite that it was Standard on the x33. Im going to look at it tomorrow. It needs a complete restore, but i think I can get it for a good price.

We'll see. I thought i was done with the old car game. Lol

It does have the grill badge after looking at the pic again. None of the others though.

Another few things, powered disc brakes up front, sway bar, and a recall was done on the car around 1970 for breaking motor mounts. It will have a bracket installed around the left motor mount. Look at the rear end bolts from the back. If you see just one in the middle, that is a 10 bolt (no Z/28) and if you see 2 evenly spaced, that is the 12 bolt.

Look at the trim tab located on drivers side fire wall . This will identify body style , paint color , interior trim , build date . Also location of plant build . los=los Angeles California , Van = Van Nuys California , Nor=Norwood Ohio . Norwood built camaros used two codes to designate z28 x33 or x77 on trim tab. Los Angeles and Van Nuys built cars did not . See thecamaro.com .

Check out Camaros.net. It's a great first gen site. There is a wealth of knowledge and information there. Those cars are faked quite a bit. Not saying the one you're looking at is a fake, but there are lots of fakes out there. Do your homework for sure. You know what they say "out of 22,000 Z/28s made in 1969 there's only 60,000 of them left" Lol. Good luck with the car.

Early built cars may not have the X code .

Sorry, I should have posted this instead of just PMing it.

It is an X33, but it doesn't have the right motor and No ProtectOplate. All the trim and emblems are missing except the one in the grill. The interior is very rough and there is a lot of rust under the car. It did have the rosewood steering wheel which I thought was cool. He wants 18k for it which i think would have been worth it if it had the right motor and didn't need so much. It was one of those to good to be true things.

I hate to say it but it probably is worth that. If the cowl tag says X33 and it still has the 12 bolt rear axle and the 4 speed and some interior parts it will bring that price. It is ashamed they cost that much. I saw one not to long ago that had no motor, trans and was rusted so bad there was not one piece of metal that could be reused or saved and that car sold for 23K. Just because it was a real Z/28. I guess who ever bought it wanted it real bad but I would not have bought it. Did you take any pics of the car? I hope you did so you could show us some. What color was the car? If it was hugger orange I would be a buyer on it maybe unless it is like the one I just told you about.

I was rather disappointed to see that it didnt have the right motor and the amount of rust under the car. The car was primered, but I believe it was a dark color originally. I really wasn't in the market for a project. That's why I would have had to have purchased it for less than 18 in that condition for it to be worth it for me. I don't believe he sold it yet. I didn't bother with pics because I wasn't interested at that cost ,and I felt the seller wasn't entirely honest in how he was portraying the car to be.
