2018 ZL1 differences with 2022 ZL1 1LE

So to begin with....2022 arrived 1 year after I ordered it. Vivid orange and it looks awesome! Great color. The bad news is, it was built without a few of the things I wanted. No PDR, no carbon fiber interior bits, no black lug nuts, no backup sensor sound, and no performance gm stitching on the armrest. All in all, I am happy with just getting the car and I can live without the options. I got the car for msrp and that was 76k, so that is good. Rear spoiler was included. I immediately noticed some differences in the car....here are some of them.
1. Rear camera in the mirror. (not sure I like that yet...time will tell)
2. Front collision warning system with a little green car or orange car on speedometer display. Not sure I will like this on the track...if it goes off all the time. Maybe it is off in Track mode?
3. The car pops and crackles like crazy on decel from about 4k down to 3k rpm. My zl1 does not do that. They must have changed the tune to do that?
4. There are some added items on the infotainment that are nice. Such as wireless apple and android connections.
5. Brakes feel different...and not in a good way. I still have to change to DOT 4 race fluid and see how it feels on track, but my initial feel is that they are much softer and not as good.
6. Motor and trans are the same.
7. The overall ride in the ZLE is semi-tolerable on long drives. ZL1 is like a Cadillac in comparison.
8. Quick canyon run yesterday shows that I will be getting better track times however, which was my goal!
9. Ride height is exactly the same. 27 1/4"
10. Zl1 scrapes on my driveway at that height....ZLE does not. Go figure.

1. I got used to the rear view mirror camera and love it now.
2. Collision detection warning, you can set the distance via the button on the steering wheel. I set mine to the furthest distance.
3. My 2021 ZL1 crackles and pops a lot as well. I heard they enhanced this in the tuning at some point.
5. I would put some miles on and then bed the brakes and reassess how you like them.
10. Make sure they don't have any spring spacers installed and used during transport that could be raising the front end up a bit.

Thanks Raptor....brakes feel different because we have to have the copper pads in Cali. I checked for spacers, all good.

You can also disable the collision system as well on the wheels.

Started in 2019. I don't think the ZLEs got it due to the big wing as the camera sits in the shark fin antenna on the roof. Maybe that changes now?

The backup camera was also improved in 2019. It has a sharper image.

I really like the camera rearview mirror. I have it on my '19 Blazer and '21 Corvette. I like that it allows for a wider view of what's behind the vehicle.

My wife doesn't like it so she uses the regular rearview mirror. When I get in and flip it to the camera, it takes about 5 seconds for my eyes to adjust but once they do I think it's great.

Hi all,

As l noted in a few other unrelated posts, my comparisons are ‘18 ZLE to ‘22 ZLE.

1. The rear view camera does take a bit of adjusting to. I guess l’m just used to looking through a dark tinted rear window and wing. I prefer that over the camera but I do use the camera when l need so see more detail.
2. I have never even used the front collision system. I don’t think l even had it in the ‘18?? I’m going to check it out when l drive the ZLE again.
3. The pops and crackles from the exhaust seem a bit more pronounced in the ‘22. I like it and won’t be changing the stock exhaust. I tried that for a very short while on the ‘18 and the system l tried had so much drone the entire interior of the car vibrated horribly. I’m pleased with the stock exhaust with the fuse pulled.
4. The wireless Apple Car Play is great. The GM OnStar navigation system is a huge rip-off in my opinion.
5. I live in AZ but had to get my ‘22 in NorCal. So I got the CF brakes as well. I don’t track the car and didn’t track the ‘18 either. But I cannot really feel any difference between the ‘18’s brakes and the ‘22’s. The CF system has slightly larger front rotors and calipers to offset the pad compound change, per GM, to equal the standard pads performance. I suppose time driving and tracking (for those who do) will tell more on this subject.
6. ‘18 to ‘22….overall performance with the ‘22 is much better. My ‘18 had a horrible stumble on off-idle which l corrected with a Mamo throttle body. It’s engine management program made the motor run so rich the pipes were always very black with carbon. The ‘22 has none of the stumbling and excessively rich running. Pipes are clean and it’s just much better to drive. The MH3 trans is still the best close ratio gearbox l’ve ever used. It makes the car, along with the great motor. My ‘22 also has much much better oil pressure than the ‘18. I am no longer worrying about an oil pump related engine failure. As another bonus, the ‘22 gets 5-6 mpg better gas mileage when freeway cruising. I’m sure that is due to the lack of the over-rich condition the ‘18 was running at.

Overall, l really love the new ‘22, even more than the ‘18. With the lower number of cars made in ‘22, l think they’ll hold value better than the past models. I’m anxious to see the total number of ZL1’s made in ‘22. I’m so glad l found mine. It looks like there is still a lower number on orders for ‘23’s as well. These cars are a dying breed. Very sad

Take care,

JJ

Regarding the rear-view camera, I love the technology, but as I'm now losing near-sight vision (I'm at that age hehe), I unfortunately cannot focus on such a close distance.

So in my case, I always leave it to the regular rearview setting... with the big wing right in the middle of my view

Another odd difference....it seems like the windows roll up much faster in the 22 than the 18. The oil pressure is much higher as well.

Congrats on the new car. If you ever need to drive north or south on a long road trip, dont take I-5. Terrible highway for a ZLE.

Thats really odd that your ZLE will not scrap. The front splitter is longer than the ZL1 which should result on more potential scrapping. Maybe even at the same high, the ZLE has stiffer suspension so it wont let it squat as much as the Magnetic ride.

the camera technology is cool. I dont have it in my camaro but with a high wing, its probably a must. I do have it in another GM car. You probably just need to get used to it. I do like paying attention to whats behind me at all times.

The charging system in Camaro is demand based. If the battery needs charging or you are running more accessories and you happen to roll down your windows you will notice they are a bit quicker as the voltage is a bit higher. If the battery is topped off the voltage is lower and the windows seem a bit slower. If you go through the menus and look for the battery voltage you can see where it is sitting.

As for oil pressure take note of the temperature of the oil when comparing. There is another thread on this right now.

My 2021 ZL1 is ~38psi cold idle, ~30psi hot idle, ~60psi at WOT. 0W40, PF64 filter.

What is the average fuel economy numbers that you are seeing on the freeway with your '22?
