Read your owner's manual. I think it says to wait more than "a few minutes." It says something about ideally you should wait a couple of hours, and if you can't wait that long, you should at least wait XX minutes.

I assume this is what you're referring to. I just changed my oil today. I'll check the level again in the morning. I've always done it the same way with every car I've owned -- get the car close to operating temp, drain oil, change filter, reinstall drain plug. Logic being with the car hot, the oil is less viscous and more drains out. Fill about 1 quart shy, start, let run a a few seconds, add until dipstick is happy.

I'll start adding the step of rechecking the dipstick after the car has sat a couple of hours. I'm not sure I fully understand why, but it can't hurt.

Yep, that's it! Looks like you need to wait 15 minutes minimum if the oil is fully warmed up (200 F) and 30 min if it's not. Guess it takes a while to get from the top to the bottom. That means if you are changing the oil and not sure how much to fill to get to your target on the dipstick, you have to wait 30 min at minimum for the last pour to get fully into the pan.

I put in 9.5 QTS to ensure it will show on the stick, then let it sit several hours (just to be sure) before reading the stick to figure out how much more to add to get to the top of the hashed area. I track mine, so wanting to ensure it's at the top without going over.

So by GM's logic, an oil change on a car dropped off cold might take an hour or two to correctly adjust the oil level, yet they pay a mechanic 0.3 hrs or 18 minutes to do the job.
Right.

Right.

Can't use logic around here.....

I dump m oil, put in 10 qrts. Double check everything, start the car and let it run for a few minutes, shut it off and check. I've checked it cold, hot, during road course sessions, etc. it always at the top of the dipstick, juuuuust over the hash mark area.

100% identical experience here as well, down to the dipstick check result.

Its has been recommended by GM to use that oil for our cars. There are better oils out there but Mobil 1 Ow-40 is a tad better than the AC Delco 5W-30.

I have a 22 1LE and it use 0W-40 vs my old 16 SS camaro said 5W-30, same engine block.

I don't sweat it too much. I just change with 10QT every time. It's always slightly "overfilled" by 1 or 2 mm if I check it after waiting a few hours. Figure it's better to be close to the top than somewhere in the middle when tracking the car a lot. Up to 3500 track miles with no issues.

When I change the oil and filter on my 2019 ZL1. (non 1LE)
I let old oil drain out of the pan for at least an hour (usually two hours).
I always use 10 quarts of fresh Mobil1 Dexos 2 0W40
I fill the AC PF64 filter with oil, dampen the gasket on the filter with oil and install it.
Initially, I fill the crankcase with only 9 quarts.
I then bring it down off the Raceramps.
Let it sit for a couple hours and keep checking the oil level. Slowly, I keep adding oil until full (I've never used more than 10 quarts total).
Full on my car (10 quarts) has always shown near the middle of the hashmarks on the dipstick. When I check the oil level, I always pull the dipstick, wipe it down, wait 15-30 minutes, then check.
I find it interesting that 10 quarts in different peoples cars show different levels on the dipstick.
10 quarts using the above procedure in my car has always resulted in the exact same spot on the dipstick in the photo below.

Likely by letting the oil drain out of your car for so long there is less residual oil left in the car than with a typical drain time, hence why 10 quarts doesn't completely fill the car to the top of the dipstick. Have you ever measured how much oil actually was drained from the car?

I have only changed the oil in my Camaro once since I purchased it. I let drain for about 15 minutes and then filled it with 9 quarts before backing off my Race Ramps on to a flat surface. When I checked the oil after letting it sit for a few minutes the oil level was at the bottom of the hash marks. So I added half a quart and let it sit overnight. The next day I checked it again and then added oil until I got to the top of the hash marks. It ended up taking the entire 10 quarts.

Certainly the entire system holds more than 10 quarts since it's almost impossible to remove all the oil from the entire system.

I have a fluid extractor that I use to change the oil in my SeaDoos, lawn mowers and several vehicles that have the oil filter on top of the engine. I like using it because you can see exactly how much oil you have removed. So it makes refilling the oil easier as you put back exactly what you removed.

Almost ready to do my 15th oil change on the 1LE in a couple weeks.
10 quarts every time and I'm at the 3/4 way up the hash marks.

Mine usually reads a little above the hatched area immediately after an oil change.

I did measure the drained amount once: 9 5/8 qts @ drain after 6000 mi interval. Dipstick still read at top of hatched area just prior to drain.

My process is to drain a level car (on lift) for 30-60 minutes and add the full 10 qts.

There is some debate on if you should replace the oil after one year of inactivity - generally, the oil will be fine, but for warranty purposes and such, it would be a good idea to follow the oil life monitor.

I have a Duramax and a 1LE. Over the past year (and since my last oil change in both) I've put maybe 1000 miles on the Duramax and around 500 street miles on the Camaro. Both oil monitors are telling me I need an oil change... never understood why until your explanation.
