Question Z/28 Inner fender

While installing the Big Gulp,WW reservoir relocation and the CAI, I noticed somethhing that kind of surprised me to say the least. I drive a 2012 #842 by the way and this is what I saw on my inner fender well while I was cleaning it. A Z28 fender well. Hmmmm......Did GM already know about the 2014 Z28 back in say...late 2011? I'm thinking oh yea. I want my ZL1 inner fender back!!
Just kidding. But I thought this was interesting.

Supposedly they decided at the last minute to call it the zl1 vs. z/28. And some of the parts were already made and stamped z/28. Maybe someone ca verify that.

You wonder why the parts are stamped Z/28 or why GM changed the name at the last minute?

For the parts - see Svens response.

For why GM changed the name at the last minute. I've read here and in other places that some higher ups didn't feel that a non NA engine in the Camaro didn't follow the spirit and history of the previous Z/28s so they pulled another classic and hardly used designations off the shelf, the ZL1.

If they are still producing the same parts and installing them on the 2012's and 13's, and if it was a last minute change as some say, that would of been a whole shit load of changes that would of had to been made. Usually in a the mass produced cars, planes, or whatever, there are engineering specs that must be approved and then sent to suppliers for the build......Maybe and I can be a little off on this but that could have had a lot to do with in getting the 2012's delivered late. Yea there were the QC hold on the CF hood and a few other hush hush type holds but maybe there were other reasons they were only able to produce 1900 or so of them.
My point is that there are no way that they could of produced all the ZL1 parts in the last minute........Just a theory. I just remember GM putting us through hell and back getting our rides delivered in 2012.

I understand what you're saying but the fact that the parts (and its only some of them) are stamped Z/28 doesn't really affect the cars designation. Besides on the real Z/28 they probably utilized some parts off of the ZL1 and in that case, it doesn't matter what it's stamped. The only things that matter are if the VINs match up with a ZL1 or Z28.

The fact remains that they were going to call the ZL1 a Z/28 (well after the mass producing of some parts had started [parts that wouldn't be seen by 95% of the public) until someone made an executive decision that a Supercharged engine didn't fit in with the nameplate history of the Z/28 so they swapped it to the ZL1.

I agree with almost everything you're saying. But the underside of the hood stamped ZL1 is a big deal. And I can go on but I still think they knew back in 2011 that 2014 was going to be a Z28.....I think it was a good production decision and marketing ploy. Just glad I got a 2012. No desire to own a Z28.
Not comfy enough for me. Now just waiting for the rain to stop

The hood yes, but the inside of a fender wall? not so important. You have to go through an entire process just to get access to that area.

Because a 4200 lb force fed Camaro doesn't quite fit the Z/28 moniker.

Zl1 indent on the underside of the hood, along with the CF insert opening for the hood which I believe took much longer to research and develop than the inner front fender well (which just added the cooling duct opening) led me to believe GM already had this on the drawing board back in 2011. Nothing to do with the 69 ZL1 which I never heard of when I was driving my 67 vett back in the seventies. The big thing in the late 60's was the all aluminum L88 427 motor and the muncie M22 rock crusher tranny that Gm incorporated into some of their muscle cars. In fact the Z28 as far as most of us was concerned back then was their flagship pony car. The Z28 had a 302 motor with all the goodies. But not a big block 427.
