2020 zl1 oil change

So i have read alot of post and I'm confused. I'm trying to figure out what is the difference from mobil one 0w-40 dexos 1 vs dexos 2. I look at my manual and it specs out for 0w-40 dexos 2,but I took it to my dealer to get my free oil change and asked them what oil they where going to use and they told me 0w-40 dexos 1 because that is what the vin# pulled up.

So my question is can they use dexos 1?

And from now on I'm changing my own oil and filter, what oil should I use and filter?

Sorry for the long post and also another oil thread.

This is the oil you should be using, the filter is an ACDelco PF64:

From the owners manual:

Quote:
Viscosity Grade
Use SAE 0W-40 viscosity grade
engine oil.
When selecting an oil of the
appropriate viscosity grade, it is
recommended to select an oil of the
correct specification. See
“Specification” earlier in this section.
If 0W-40 dexos2 oil is not available,
SAE 5W-30 dexos1 full synthetic
engine oil may be used for
street use.

Specification
Use engine oils that meet the
dexos2 specification.
Engine oils
that have been approved by GM as
meeting the dexos2 specification
are marked with the dexos2
approved logo. See
www.gmdexos.com.

Follow your owners manual, use only what they specify for your 2020 ZL1. This shouldn’t be confusing....

Honestly, if it were my car and the Dealer's "free" oil change was only Dexos 1, I'd pass and do it myself... (I never took advantage of any "free" oil changes as the few bucks saved wasn't worth risking some idiot at a dealer screwing up my car... My car has 1,900 miles on it and has already had 2 oil and 2 diff fluid changes (at 505 & 1,500 miles), I did them both myself...

They probably misspoke about Dexos 1 vs 2. You're worry way too much about it.

If the 0w40 isn't available then the 5w30 is perfectly fine and is what came in these cars for the first few years.

This is most likely true as when I review the Dexos1 approved oil list it doesn't have any 0W-40 oils listed.
https://www.gmdexos.com/brands/dexos1/index.html

The Dexos2 list only shows 2 brands of 0W-40 approved, Mobil1 ESP and a Castrol Edge.
https://www.gmdexos.com/brands/dexos2/index.html

So according to these lists, if they are using a Mobil1 0W-40 it's either Dexos2 or not Dexos approved at all. There isn't any Dexos1 0W-40.

So dealer just called me back and apologized that they give me the wrong information. They said the parts guy give the service writer the wrong oil specs. But they are changing the oil with 0w-40 dexos2.

Since both "/W40" and "/W30" viscosity grades are approved, as long as they are Dexos2 certified, then you are perfectly fine.
So using 0W40, 5W40 and 5W30 should be perfectly fine.

The difference of the low figure (0 or 5) is only relevant for the flow of the oil in the colder temperatures.

0 is officially spec.ed to flow at lowest ambient temps below -22. So as long as you are not using the car at such low ambients, you can use the 5 spec.
On the other side of the scale, the high Temp. range (especially in hot climate / regions: I.E. FL, AZ, NV, Etc.) it is beneficial to use the 40 spec.

Here is an article which, includes a temperature range chart for the various oil grades:
https://fuelandfriction.com/weekend-...ine-oil-today/

An even better one here:
https://www.motorstate.com/oilviscosity-htm/

That is a great idea also, just ordered a quick jack setup so I can start to do my own maintenance. But I think I'm still going to take it to the dealership for a trans flush.
