Time for a Cam!

Ok, so after running consistent 11.0 passes in the car with longtubes, hi-ram, stock 95mm TB, and flex fuel, I decided to tear the thing apart for the cam, converter, and heads. The car probably could’ve ran into the 10’s if I wasn’t being stubborn and thrown a radial on the car over the slick and played with the tuning some more.

But anyway, I decided to get with Ryan at GPI and talked with him about the goals for the car and see what his thoughts were. In the end we decided on the Hi-Ram cam, stock ported/milled heads by them, Circle D converter, Johnson link lifters, ATI balancer, and a few other odds and ends. I ended up having to flycut for the cam, so I figured since I’ve got family that owns a machine shop I’d have the bottom end balance. I also decided to just put new rings and bearings in while It was apart. The car isn’t back up and running yet due to me waiting on some parts to get here because of COVID. Now I just need to have the heads sent to them and get them done and it’ll be ready to go fire up. Once I do have everything together, I’m going to schedule a day to take the car down to GPI and have it tuned by them. The goal is to run into the 9’s with the new setup. I do plan on driving it as much as I did before, I do plan on keeping the factory front seats, and I do plan on keeping the a/c for those warm days. Lol. Here are some pictures I’ve gathered up to this point

Nice, should be a pretty impressive setup and even better that you plan on still driving it as usual.

Thanks, I really think I’ll hit my goal with the car. I like the idea of being able to have a setup that I can go fast with and still be able to drive it whenever I want, drive it to the track and back, and most of all take the son out in it for a cruise.

Parts already look awesome and they aren't even installed yet Do you plan to keep the stock driveshaft and halfshafts, or have you already upgraded those as well?

Looks great and glad to hear you are not gutting the car to chase a time. Just curious, Any reason in particular why you went with Harland Sharps over the Comp Ultra Pro Mag's?

Thanks, they are really awesome in person 😂. I plan on getting a 1 piece driveshaft. I unfortunately have to wait because of the lead time on them right now. As for halfshafts, I plan to keep them stock right now. I may get some this fall/winter.

Genv 4.3L with ecm and harness are cheap as dirt and would be light and roomy, surprising amount of off idle torque. Would be my choice

Thanks man! Yea, I have no interest in gutting the car or pulling the interior out of the car. If I can’t reach my goal with this setup, then I’ll just resleeve the block and go with more cubes. 😂 😁. Main reasons was because the of the lighter mass for the spring to control and we’ve used them in the past with no issues. Honestly if Yella Terrs made a set of the ultra lights, like they do for the LS Stuff I’d have probably picked them up lol. But I’ve heard good things about both the Comp’s and Hardland Sharps on the Gen V community.
