Complete Build Thread Hertz Callaway Hendricks Motorsports ZLE
VIDEO Below -
Hey guys, well it's been a long process, starting with deciding to purchase car #7 of 24, Hertz ZL1 Camaro's back in early June of 2020 when Hertz announced selling their fleet of 200 Hendrick’s Motorsports camaro SS's, and the 24 ZL1 Camaro’s. Of which, at the time were also Hertz’s most expensive car to rent at $399 a day up to 75 mile maximum! The 24 ZL1 cars were to celebrate the Nascar Driver William Byron's car 24 and the partnership between Hertz & Hendrick's motorsports since 2018. With 2020’s One Lap of America cancelled, I had decided to sell my 2018 ZL1 1LE, and figured I’d wait awhile to get a car for next years One Lap event. Well… 2 months waiting is ‘awhile’ right? Once these limited edition cars came along, I thought how cool it might be to bring back the heritage of the Shelby Hertz Mustang’s of the 60’s as ‘rent a racers’… and while most the cars done now by hertz have been stickered up rental cars, to have a package done by Hendrick’s Motorsports and Callaway Cars, seemed to be a heck of a foundation to ‘prepare for track use’ and build in next year's One Lap of America, Global Time Attack & Super Lap Battle. The start of the process, was to convert everything from 'standard ZL1 to ZL1 1LE. Not an easy task as many of you probably know, to get every little piece that's different, and all 100% GM OEM (the parts list is many pages long). Frankly I still have the ZLE Trans pan to install, and the ICCM controller to receive the ZLE flash. I removed all non 1LE parts and boxed them all up, to be able to return the vehicle to OEM if ever needed. After completing the full transition to ZL1 1LE, and in speaking with Hendrick’s Motorsports and Callaway Cars, I learned how quickly these guys are serious about all things cars and going fast. Tom Oates, former SCCA Touring 2 Champion, as well as World Challenge race car driver (remember the tiger striped corvette?) Also a class I shortly followed him afterwards, and won the 2005 Jim Fitzgerald Rookie of the year title in SCCA Touring 2. Tom introduced me to Pete Callaway, Reese’s son. Pete & Tom mentioned that Hertz didn’t actually do the ‘complete’ Callaway package, wanting to keep the TVS2300 blower under the hood, and recommended for track use, should include the plenum spacer and get the top of the blower up in the cooler outside air. So Tom, Pete & I worked out a deal that I would bring the car to Callaway Cars in Temecula, California where he and the Callaway team would complete the package, align the car and do some data logging to make sure it could run on track without heat issues. (We've scheduled some track days later this year where Callaway will come out and do some on track data analysis as well. Fast forward another month, and I picked the car up from Reese & Pete Callaway and trailered back home to Chandler, AZ. We registered for the first ‘track event’ available, which was ‘Mussleman Honda Circuit’ in Tucson, AZ. It’s a Go Kart track primarily, that does HPDE & Time Attack events. Just under 1 mile in length, and 17 turns! The event would be Saturday the 19th... a 'chilly' 98 degree's Fahrenheit at 6pm. And would get down to about 90 degrees by 9pm, and we’d run from 6pm to 10pm. The goal was to go sub 1 minute on Goodyear Supercar 3's (Non R) 220 treadwear tires. While the 3R’s are the standard ZLE tire, the series we’ll be running in, require a 200TW+ tire. After our first at the track, I just absolutely LOVE this car!!! Had plenty of gremlins appear, but I'll continue to get her sorted, so, here's the update from track even #1: Let's get to the results, In my first showing there, we ended up taking 3rd place over all cars! Only beat by a full race C6 Corvette, on Hoosier A7’s and a nicely built C5 Corvette on Pirelli slicks! I was next fastest with a 59.188 on Goodyear 200TW street tires!! (backed up by a 59.2, and other mid to low 59's) Our first event, wouldn't go without our share of challenges... In the first session, the right front tire went flat to 16psi on lap 3 or 4, so I pulled in, removed wheel and tire, looked everything over, re-tightened valve stem and TPMS and all was good. (Although it was tight, so going to have to dismount the tire and see what’s up as it lost 5 psi throughout the night compared to the others) Second session, after 10 HOT laps... we boiled the brake fluid... completely lost all brakes!!! Barely could stop the car, in neutral entering in the hot pits, had to let car sit for 40 minutes, before I was able to drive back to the paddock. I bled the brakes, (again) using Redline Race Brake fluid and then car was bulletproof next two sessions! (Same fluid that failed earlier, but it was 95+ degrees... and had been out on course for 10 consecutive hot laps, with really no area to 'cool the brakes'. Session 3 would go much better, car was almost flawless, one 'ice mode' where I stayed in the throttle a bit longer than I should have, and went hard on the brake pedal, with little time in between gas/brake... and got the 'Hard Pedal'... I've had this before in our corvette race cars, and the nice thing when running G-Lock pads, is I know... just keep standing on the pedal and it will slow down... and it did! And I put up my best time of day in that session, running a 59.188... and doing 7 fast consistent laps... still a little over 90 degrees. Session 4, I would wait until 9:30 to go back out, it was finally below 90 degrees... I backed up my 59.1, running a 59.2. And had good data/camera this session (that I didn't get in session 3). So the in car below is that fast lap and data feed using HP Tuners Race Addicts & Race Render. (I'm new to the software, so forgive the quality, I'll get better with it). Only remaining gremlin, is I'm getting a service ride suspension error, so I'm not sure if my cancelors are not able to fool the car when in PTM Sport 2 and/or Race? Or if it’s the ride height sensors, sending a ‘out of range’ due to the ZLE suspension vs. Mag Ride differences? It didn't seem to reduce any power, just wouldn't allow for me to completely disable traction control. Which isn't the end of the world, on bigger tracks it's barely noticeable, but on smaller tight stuff, even in race it was cutting in a few spots that normally wouldn't. When at a track I've never ran, I typically start in Sport 2, while learning the track, then go up to Race, and then goto full off and see if any better... if not, settle back on Race and leave it. I’ve tried to include in this thread some pics of the full build, and video of Musselman. I’ll continue to update this thread as the car continues to run at events locally and across the country. Appreciate your thoughts and comments and recommendations! Really want to say thank you to: Callaway Cars Hendrick’s Motorsports G-Loc Brakes APEX Race Wheels GM for creating such a bitchin' platform! https://youtu.be/U6xQU6Ye8KI . .

I've got a couple questions.
1. What wheels are those in pics 10-12? 2. which harness bar/belt combo are you using? TIA. |

Cool video. Love the night thing too. Now I want to try it. We used to have an autocross event that started at dusk and sometimes went to dawn.

That track looks very fun, one of the most forgiving tracks I've ever seen. You could push it almost every turn and not worry about consequences of going off, except some of the light poles :-) Seems like a great place to practice tight turns and car control.

I'm so bummed we didn't get to run with you this year, and that my personal plans have me sidelined for a few years. I'll be back to One Lap in 2024, maybe still in the Camaro.

Great looking car! Your last name start with an S and end with a Z and I'm sure you're still using the Velcro ice bags I sold you a few years ago?
I'm now into a ZL1 myself, though not pressing things as hard as I did 10 years ago. Again, love the car! As I'm looking for some harnesses for my ZL1 as well, I'm getting where the lap belts attach, but are you saying the back goes to the shoulder belt up high on each side? I contacted schroth a month ago asking about such a setup and they said they'd have a specific setup for the 6th gen camaro after the first of the year. I've got a short track race the end of Oct but the Wildhorse pass mondo after Thanksgiving that I definitely want to have some harnesses in the car by then so I'm interested in your setup and how confident you are in it.
