How do I temporarily disconnect my Samsung phone?

My wife just had a medical procedure and wanted the radio off on the drive home. Easy enough. I had my Bluetooth headphones on so I stuck one in and hit the play button so I could listen to my book on the drive home. Every time I tried playing it the car would play it instead. I disconnected from the radio menu and it just reconnected, same with the phones bluetooth menu (needed to keep bluetooth on for my headphones). Tried to turn off audio for the car in the phone menu but it was already turned off. Is there any way to disconnect my phone from the car other then making them forget each other thus having to set it back up next time?

He said the headphones are Bluetooth.

I think you'd have to disconnect the phone in the car infotainment menu, not on the phone. Tell it to disconnect from the phone and it won't reconnect until you set the phone back up with the car. I don't think there's any other way without at least a small re-setup

You can switch the output on Android. Change it to Bluetooth earbuds in your media app.

I know that with wireless Android Auto, you have to FIRST swipe down the notification shade and Disconnect AA before turning off bluetooth for a moment. If you turn off BT (or just disconnect it from the car), the AA connection will turn BT back on and reconnect the phone because both connections are required. I know that this is how the wireless AA works but I am not 100% certain it's identical with wired AA (but believe it would be the same).
