Windshield with HUD cracked

So the subject line is pretty much self-explanatory. When I go to replace it, will any windshield do or does it have to be one specific for Cars with HUD? Thank you.

Every manufacturer with HUD has a separate glass as those regular windshields typically aren’t treated and distort the HUD’s image

No HUD and obviously anecdotal but I've had pretty poor luck with Safelite. I echo the comment above, go with OEM through the dealer if you can, especially with an HUD.

Go with HUD, and avoid Safelite if you can.

Terrible experience with them, and about half the customers who came into their facility in the 3 hours while I was there came in to address a previous repair issue. Seemed more interested in getting the jobs done quickly rather than quality.

Have two family members that had work done by Safelite and both had issues with gaskets/seals. In the case of one, which was a rear window, the defogger didn't work properly, either. So yeah, I think with the HUD tech, best to avoid and go right to GM.

I've had better experiences with two of the long time independent shops here in Nashville.

Most GM dealers don't do their own glass. They contract with a nearby shop. Maybe ask a service advisor what that shop is, or maybe the dealer will do it as a pass-through service for you if you purchased there.

Non-HUD glass will work, but it's not the same. For the best, factory HUD image quality, go with the correct coated glass. OE is usually the best choice. Aftermarket from the same OE supplier may be available (i.e. Pilkington) and may even be the same quality, but will not have GM logos.

Independent shops will be able to order OE glass, so getting OE glass shouldn't confine you to going to a dealer.

I had my OEM windshield ordered through Safelite it took 3 weeks and when they installed it it was off center and the gasket was pinched on one side. they order a new one all under their warranty waited another 3 weeks and the results were perfect.

I'm going to add my votes for:

- Avoid Safelite like the plague
- Go OEM

HUD windshields are different from cars without HUD.

I bought a 2020 Acadia Denali last year, CPO, and they found a crack way down on the bottom of the windshield. Can't sell CPO with that so they had me take it to a local shop they use for glass work (and dealer paid). Shop used 3rd party glass, specific to HUD (it has to be to see the display). Image looked "smushed" to me, and I took it back to dealer and compared side-by-side with another Denali they had on the lot. Multiple salesmen agreed the image was distorted so I insisted on OEM GM glass replacement. They agreed and I took it back to same shop. Owner of shop looked at it too, and agreed. Dealer ordered an OEM glass and had it delivered to shop where they reinstalled the OEM glass. Had a long convo with shop owner and he had never seen anything like it, but totally agreed with me. He schooled me on how the whole thing works with HUD glass, very knowlegable guy! He said he took it all the way up to his supplier's upper mgmt and made them aware of the issue. Some of the best service I've ever experienced!
Lesson learned? Always INSIST on OEM glass for a HUD car.

Be sure to get factory OEM Brand new HUD spec. No third party, no aftermarket, nothing used. Not all HUD-coated windshields need the spec for our cars.

Had a 3rd party HUD specific glass (State Farm wouldn't cover OEM glass) installed in my car by a 'reputable' local place. They scratched the hell out of the metal under the cowl scraping the old molding or whatever they were doing. The HUD was blurry and crooked.

Had Safelite come out to install OEM HUD specific glass (also covered by insurance since first install didn't work). The tech did a great job and sealed the scratches left by previous hack job. HUD was now clear and aligned.

The kicker: The OEM glass install was less than the 3rd party crap glass by about $250. Way to shoot yourself in the foot State Farm, no wonder you are bleeding money.

Thanks for all the info in this thread. I was able to ask GEICO for OEM HUD glass for my windshield repair. It's going to cost about $350 but I'd rather have it done right than bother with aftermarket glass and having a blurry HUD.
