Bolt on SS A8/A10 VS ZL1 1LE A10
What’s up guys, just curious if anyone knows what are the bare minimum mods it takes for an Automatic SS to be able to out run a ZL1 1LE A10?
I’m talking about straight line only btw! Please don’t say get a blower 😂 Is it possible with just bolt ons and E85? If anyone here has a done it please chime in. |

Non 1LE ZL1 is faster at the top end. Doesn't have as much drag as the 1LE.

I'm assuming you're wanting to know if it's possible for a N/A SS to out run a ZL1?
I don't know if it's possible with just boltons, (particularly with a stock rear gear) but I'm pretty sure a well built and tuned H/C/I/bolton/E85 A10 SS could outpace a stock A10 ZL1 1LE. (and probably by a decent amount) You would probably need to at least be cammed, and these aren't LS motors so it's hard to consider a cam a bolton with the GEN5 motor like many do with the GEN3/GEN4 motors. They are much more involved and costly to swap, and you're going to want to delete the AFM so you may as well port the heads while they're off the motor. If the ZL1 starts to mod his car you may be in trouble if you intend to stay N/A. |

A stock ZL1 usually traps anywhere from 123-127 from what I know. I understand once he modifies his car it’s game over Forsure Was just curious if any one has beaten one with simple bolt ons, guess I’ll be the one to try it. I’m completely expecting to get walked tho Last edited by Murder6.2; 08-05-2020 at 08:54 PM. |

This is m6 to m6, intake/exhaust (assuming stock tune) zl1 1le vs pray e85 fbo (high ram) ss 1le. The ss 1le seemed to have an advantage hooking up and on 40 rolls, the zl1 1le showed better top end on the 60 roll.

I think NA will outpace a stock ZL1, I do think a stock or slightly modded Zl1 to be a pretty fun well rounded, strong package, with warranty. I would always go with an SS just because I knew I would mod period and the SS was lighter and way cheaper. If I was not doing my own work and / or did not have a garage.. I would seriously look at a ZL1.
The SS FBO with PS4 is about at the traction limit. Any FI does not make the car any faster at any reasonable legal to outright crazy road speeds. So if you don't intend to run DR and or be at a prep track NA is going to offer all the HP you can reasonably needed. Plus there is something to be said if you do HC it is pure glory shifting thru a high comp, high RPM V8 with a great Hurst shifter M6, something that I have not had since my 69 Z/28, I'm glad I've gone full circle and my first and last Camaros were manuals.

We got it done and have some testing
Cars were a 2017 Camaro SS A8 VS a 2020 ZL1 1LE A10 SS “mod list” was Rotofab Intake CA cat deletes E85 ECM tune only And ZL1 was stock Anything under a 50 roll the SS jumps ahead and stays ahead until 115 By 125 the ZL1 is a car ahead 60 rolls the ZL1 has a huge advantage in power and gearing and takes off The top end is significantly superior on ZL1 as it is to be expected but anything under 100 is very close. Not sure how to upload videos of the runs Last edited by Murder6.2; 08-22-2020 at 03:57 PM. |
