I think it's a generation thing. I can remember back in the day when I had a modified vr-4 running straight downpipe, leaving my then-girlfriends house at 2 in the morning. I'd crank it up and let it idle for 10 minutes or so before I left. I was an asshole. looking back, I don't know why I did it. Then, I didn't care.

Now, I'd rather be known, at least, as someone that keeps his car quiet. My car is in touring mode until it's warmed up (which is usually a few redlights away), every morning.

Having said that, if someone complains to me about it, they can suck one. It's stock.

Buy a beater...10 year old compact car (with an exhaust lol) on the cheap to drive back and forth to work. Problem solved.

It's part of living in suburbia, unfortunately. I leave for work at 5:30am and was very conscious of the cold start. I tried to be as civil as I could that time of the morning. Thankfully, I got a truck just to drive back and forth to work that's not nearly as loud.

Now, if their kids are snot-nosed brats that block the street when you're trying to go through, then it's game on.

I still don't buy the noise thing.
I used to live for a while in a small town, where the local freight train used to go by 2-3 times a week, early morning; perhaps 20 cars or so.
The tracks were just the other side of the road, roughly 60 feet from the house.
First week, it woke me up, but after that, I couldn't even remember it passing through.
I still say the writer of that letter was still over-reacting, and intent on raising those shielded snowflakes/twinkies for kids.
But the guy who posted is still being reasonable and cautious about a heavy foot.
So the comments about a significant number of the posters here as being "assholes" doesn't cut it, IMO.
This state, if anything was even close to being unreasonably loud, I'm sure it wouldn't be sold here. A stock quad goes for $900, and not modified?

Well this one has been beat to death already, but I'll chime in.

To the OP. It obviously took a decent amount of courage for your neighbor to drop you that note, and they were not "hostile" at all. Very considerate if you ask me. That should mean a lot.

I haven't read through the whole thread, but it sounds to me like you don't have kids. Well, when you finally do have children...especially very young children and something....anything makes a loud noise at night and wakes them up...it sucks.

Whether or not you care now, I'm willing to bet that you'll think about this when you have a kid at home that you've been struggling with for hours to get to sleep peacefully, only to be woken up by who knows what.

Do the right thing. Take the extra 10 seconds to put the car in stealth mode before you leave. I love the NPP exhaust on my car also, but nobody is impressed by a loud exhaust early in the morning.

ill just say don't be surprised if putting it in stealth mode isn't the end of it. odds are they are just looking for someone to blame for their current woes.

I've had fines up to $800 just for parking my nephews car which was covered in rust and primer in my own driveway. There's no "law" for any of that either.. but in any HOA managed subdivision...The HOA IS the law. courts don't care what the little man thinks because HOA keeps their jobs crap tons easier.

..I mean you can fight it if you want but it won't be cheap. You will need a lawyer at minimum or your word will mean absolutely nothing against theirs in court where they will easily have an attorney against your cause. You also risk losing your home.

I always start mine with the door closed and give it a few seconds to settle down before opening the door. During cold start up I would say its too loud for my residential neighborhood.

During normal driving and warm starts it's not loud enough

And that's why I'll never purchase where there's an HOA. While I totally get the advantages of rules and regulations in a community, they are often headed by aholes who are too heavy-handed and unreasonable. And they can pick on whomever they feel like.

Where I live, no HOA, and people still treat each other with respect. Luckily, noise is the norm here so unless someone brings in a marching band at 1am, no one seem to care. The houses being fairly sound proof definitely helps as well.

To the OP;Under normal circumstances, I'd say screw them since your car is stock, but i have to agree with the others that the tone of the letter was friendly. Give the silent mode a shot and if that's not good enough, then you know what to do with any future complaints.

It's tricky; some people and children are simply more sensitive and affected by noise than others. As someone that's had kids, I'm sympathetic to the letter-writer..if I was back at a point where I was leaving the house prior to 7AM, I might put Fuse 51 back in and go stealth, as a courtesy. The note seemed sincere, the way things are supposed to be handled.

As it is, I work from home, and it's rare that I'm starting up to go anywhere before 8:45AM. It's noisy, I have no excuse..but I love it and it's part of the experience of this vehicle. The children that live close are already at school or daycare, so I don't concern myself with that. I drive conservatively through the neighborhood, low revs. Perhaps there's a 3rd shift worker along the way..sorry for that, but if I kept those hours, I'd probably expect daylight-hour noises and use earplugs.

I leave for work at 6am and occasionally wake up my kids starting the car (5 and 6 years old). I'd rather be dealing with an anonymous letter than suggestions from my wife.

Well, this gives me yet another reason to never live in a HOA area. Sounds crazy. I know you were not trying to be rude but it seemed ridiculous (to me) that HOA would have even a small amount of power.
