Fueling up
Can anyone verify this, can I have the engine running while I'm putting in gas?

Sure but probably illegal in a few states.

That's a bit of an odd question so why are you wondering?

I do it occasionally. I think the days of sparks coming out the exhaust are long gone - unless your GF is bouncing it off the rev limiter while you’re gassing up.

Pump
My battery had died so I needed the car to be running or I wouldn't be able to start it up again at the pump.

You'll be fine. When mine had a bad cell before I had it replaced it got to the point where once I shut the car off I would have to leave it for at least 2 hours or it wouldn't start again. I had to gas up once and leave the car on or risk getting stranded at the gas station.

Yes, you can. The gas gauge will show that you're filling it up too.
Being in a North Dakota, this is a common thing to do during the winter so you don't get stranded at the gas station. Not many cars like -55 degree weather.

You may get a check engine light for the gas cap being off.

In N.Y. it is illegal to leave any vehicle running while putting fuel in it . Also all gas cans have to be plastic or urenthane. [no metal]
I pulled into a gas station one time with my motorcycle and there was a car on the other side of the pump with his hood up & another car pulled up. I asked him if is car wouldn't start & answer was yes. I said your not going to jump the car at the pump are? Dum ass answer is yes. I blew my top & told him to push the car out of spark danger. Thing got a little heated between us when luckly a cop pulled up. Things turned in to argueing between them. I got on my bike and left. Never did hear the out come of the situation.
